I could show you what I have in my files. I have the patent if you want to see it. Does yours have a patent date?

Thanks BigC .. I think he held three patents on the same style buckle with only minor revisions, and had a reissue in 1868 on the design. There is nothing in any of his patent abstracts that identify this style buckle as a suspender buckle. I am not sure where that attribution for this buckle came from.

Big topic of discussion in my/our little private group...CC Hunter,Ironman, and others. That type was used on money belts as well....almost looks like what you have Rob.I am always quick to jump when someone calls every one of this style of buckle a suspender buckle....some of the wider ones were, but there more used on the backs of trousers, sides of vests, and things like money belts

That style,I have most noted on the sides of vests,to take up the "slack".

Here are some other uses for similar buckles

Creskol,

The buckle you have there is the style patented by Samuel Hartshorn in 1855, as illustrated in the patent provided by BCH. These buckles are seen in a variety of clothing applications in use for over a half century. Kuger is correct, as we have often discussed and clarified these commonly found items that are frequently identified erroneously as suspender buckles. 19th Century trouser backs with an adjustment strap, and vest backs (rather than the sides) are two of the most popular uses of these buckles.
