I work pretty much from daylight to just before dark during the week, so getting off half an hour early was a boon. I carry my MD in the truck and headed to an area that I have wanted to hunt since I got my detector. The field is small and one end has been taken up by some buildings now, but it has a decent history. It was part of the maneuver area for 1902-4 Army Maneuvers. It later became Camp Lewis for WW I and had a YMCA on the edge of it. I saw a picture taken in 1939 and there were no buildings at all on it. Many of the buildings burned or were dismantled after WW I. It currently sits between senior officer and junior NCO quarters, and .1 miles from the Officer's Club. It has, for the last 13 years held a sports field and has been a location for formations. I stopped by today and after checking an old loading dock for the rail spur that has run through hee since 1917, I made it onto the field. My first target sounded like a coin, and when I dug, I found this button at about 8 inches. It had at least one layer of fill over it, probably levelled when the buildings were built. My next target also registered as a coin and when I got down to it, I found this late 1910's, early 1920's enameled coffee mug. I dug a few .30-06 casings and my last target was at about 4 inches and registered as a coin. When I recovered it, I thought it was some type of personalized dog tag, but it turned out to be a rabies tag from 1955. Interesting day. Other than shell casings, I found no trash. I did not perform any type of gridding, just a quick walk-through. I can't wait to return to this field. I know there is silver and indians waiting...
