NM Ghost town finds

Well after visiting with the relatives down in S. New Mexico all day Thursday and eating enough turkey until I thought I would grow feathers, I ventured off to a ghost town about 45 miles south of my sisters house. I spent the day looking for broken glass and trash which are the areas I look for when relic hunting. I drove alot of narrow 2 track roads and arroyos looking around. eventually I ran across an old turquoise mine and looked around for a while. I picked up a small piece of the green stone and continued my hunt for relics. Late in the day I came over this hill and saw the glitter of broken glass on a ridge about 1/4 mile to the east, so I parked the truck, got out the equipment and treked over to the dump. I was using my sniper coil, 4.5" excelorator, and moving slow in the rusty cans and got my first target. when I dug it up, there was this nice old lock with the inscription of
N.M.R.Y & C Co. on it. Not too bad a find especially when it had not been cut and was still intact. I hunted around a while longer and by this time it was getting late and I was miles from the highway and if you know anything about the NM desert, you dont want to be out there after dark in November. It might be 72 deg. now but after the sun goes down, you better bring in the brass monkeys....if you know what i mean! It will get real cold, real fast. So as I was making my way back to the truck, I got a good signal and there it was... An 1886 Dime !, man this is what this hobby is about. After a find like this, it doesnt matter that I trapest around the desert all day long not finding anything , there she was.....if only she could talk and tell me how she got out here. I also found a couple of ringed bullets and some coverall buttons...the dime and the lock made it all worth it and as I made my way to the highway, the beautiful NM sunset at my back, it was all worth it.

Nice finds. I know the area well, spend a lot of time there, but never have found a lock like that one. Beauty, congrats. I also have found a couple of seated dimes in the area 1884,1896, roughly in the same condition as yours, go figure. The miners must have had a lot of dimes for the vending machines, lol. Thanks for sharing. Love the lock, now go find the key. It is a beautiful area.

The photo was taken with a telephoto lense....the lock is only 3.0 inch tall. I was trying to show the NMRY & C Co. on it!!!!
