NJ Nor'easter finds 14kt 18kt gold, silver, Field finds Merc 1916dddddnoitsanS..
I finally got around to post my finds from my last few hunts.
Starting with one of the best Nor'easters last week I think we've had since fall of 97/winter of 98, also one of my personal best beach hunts at a couple NJ beaches over two days.
Notable Beach Finds:
Lots of fishing weights/lures as usual
57 quarters
43 nickels
55 dimes
67 pennies
1944 Merc
1934, and two dateless wheats
Sex Position Token
University of Wisconsin Parking Meter Token
Nice ROOTS watch -Model R174 (small scratch on the crystal, but still working when it came out of the ground, a bit too small to fit me)
2 silver rings
1 silver bracelet
14kt St Christopher charm
Unknown metal/stones crucifix charm
750 (18kt) gold Crucifix with chain (love seeing gold chains hanging out the bottom of my scoop)
Other misc.junk jewelry
50 cal and smaller bullets
6 musket balls (my first – most likely pumped onto beach during replenishment a while ago)
Next hunt which was this past week at a field I finally got permission to hunt, until I showed up to find that they had planted their rye already a day earlier….owner let me hunt anyway since seeds had just gone down. Very few finds, but all noteworthy for me. Fertilizer really ate the crap out of two of these coins. 1882 Indian Head, dateless almost non identifiable “V” nickel, and what I thought was a 1916-D Merc. When it came out of the ground, I saw 1916…heart started racing a bit…..I turned it over…and saw a mintmark…impossible to tell if D or S in the field…didn’t want to field clean it either just in case… ran that back to the car….got home, gentle cleaning shows an S…..maybe next time I will get the D.
Last hunt was at a spot I thought I wiped out already….lots of old shotgun shells, an ICMA fob, a nice lantern part that still turns, some bell parts, and one lone 1892 Indian Head. It came out of the ground dirty as hell….got home and threw it right into a warm peroxide bath overnight…no prerinse/preclean with water whatsoever…just right on in….it came out really, really nice.
One of best set of consecutive hunts I’ve had in a while.
