I decided since silver has been comming scarce at the old parks.That I would try to dig as many Nickle signals as I could,and it paid off......I dug 3 I.H. cents....2 1901,and a 1906......19 wheat cents...10 of which were between 1913,and 1931 d..the other 9 were 40's-50's...........I dug 5 newer Jefersons,and Four V nickles.........I was digging one of the Nickle signals,,,and I got 2 hits........Come to find out....The first one was about 8"....and was a 1904 V nickle stuck to a 1898 O barber dime.....I rescanned the hole,,dug another inch or so,,,and got a No date V nickle...........The other 2 V nickles were in 2 separate holes....a 1899,and 1891...
They are in rusty shape..so I will see what I can do to clean them up for a picture to include here tommorrow.

Very cool Dave. I try to concentrate on Nickel/gold tones at times, but always give up after 10 minutes or 10 pull-tabs. Look forward to the pics!

Re: Nickles gave up a silver

Holy crap! So let me get this straight, all of those signals were in the 12-13 to 12-15 range on the E-Trac?

Are you sure you don't want to change your name back to McNickel?

Hey Thanks TreasureFiend....I'll have to get some tommorow and try it out....Do you just dip them in there and rinse....Or let them soak a couple minutes ? I always wondered if there was a better way than using salt and vinegar...Thanks Again for the tip.

Re: Nickles gave up a silver

You just spray enough to cover them then let them sit for 20 min or so in a bowl then rub them with your fingers until the red and brown wipes off. It may take a few times then rinse them off with water then put just a little baking soda on the with some water to neutralize the lime away then rinse with water again and your done. I've seen other people do it and it is awesome (I hate the way salt and vinegar eats away at the nickels).

Thanks TreasureFiend..........I will try it,and if they turn out good....I will post some after Cleaned pics of the V Nickles...

Nice selection of goodies there!
I'll have to try that technique at the goose poo motherlode.
Maybe I'll get another buffalo right out in the open field like the one that surprised Lowbatts.

Do you usually concentrate on the sound only or look for specific numbers on the display, or both?
Straight coins mode or have you also discriminated out junk like crown caps, pull tabs, nails, etc?

I hunt in coin mode mostly......But sometimes when it is an open and clearded area.....I will have my disc tuned low...To accept most trash (So Trash won't mask a goodie)but I still make sure to have Iron disced out....I listen for solid tones (expecially faint ones) low OR high tone,,and keep my eye on the depth meter....I'll dig any solid Nickle Numbers up to 6",and If the numbers get a little jumpy, but it pinpoints 6" or better...I'll dig those as well....Both Low & High conductivity when I am looking for Nickles, and a stray silver.....BUT....I did not hear one silver tone today......The place IS getting hunted out (for Silver) So why not go for the nickles ?.....I am hoping to get lucky and find some Ole Gold as well H.H.

McEtrak,

You are a genuine source of inspiration to us all. Patience and determination, and look, you found the beautiful Barber dime the other silver freaks would surely have missed. A lot of guys will pass on the nickels, sometimes with good reason, but I always dig them, as they are about as exciting to me as seeing silver in the hole.
