I was invited to scout out and hunt a new site with one of my hunting buddies, Louis. We had a bit of a challenge making the 1/2 mile hike through the back of the park woods as the weeds and briars are getting thick. I slipped and landed on my Nox 5 minutes in and had to fire it up o see if I had enabled it kaput, all good, just a “mudd butt” and a bruise. Eventually decided to hike the stream, wet boots and all, as it was the only passage to the old farmstead dot from the 1851 map.
We figured that we were close on our gps map app and found an area with older trees and started swinging. About 15 minutes into swinging just bullets and shells I got a nice 23-25 signal.
Finding the skeleton key unlocked a bunch of quick finds.
The 1835 Large Cent is the nicest one I have ever found and my earliest IHP. Louis was popping old coins and tokens as well, his 1830 LC was the oldest coin and in even better shape than my 1835.
Here is the handful of relics.
We eventually found the cellar hole.
Most of the finds were in a 50’x50’ area to the east of the hole and also scattered throughout this area were loads of oyster shells? Super unusual for W PA.
Here is a handful of other period bits, including a small silver band.
Also, after a short drought, I’m back on the spoons...
And wrapped this little piece as a funny Mother’s Day gift this morning.
Good luck out there and happy Mother’s Day!
