Ironhorse and I were at it again. First season in years the sites have decided to disc us out, but we'll keep swinging the coil until the ground freezes hoping for something with a little (or a lot) of WOW factor. I did however manage to get a nice button which is a decent result considering the lack of any good new sites happening.

In 1797 Lord Nelson and and the British Royal Navy defeated the Spanish Navy and seized their ship, then called the San Josef. It's never been confirmed but this is most likely a button to commemorate that great victory - probably the 10th anniversary.

Yes, lots of color on that one. Great find! :occasion14:

That's a very interesting find IP. Hopefully someone will turn up some history on it.

What is interesting about these is it's only IH and myself finding them and have never seen a single one dug in the UK. No one has ever been able to say for certain what they are and when they were made, even a professional researcher for the Royal Navy and her colleagues whom she had emailed. It has been about 15 years since I dug my first and the mystery goes on.

Beautiful. Banner.

Those buttons are great cause they bring history alive.
Great find.

Nicest example out there...I'd sure like to see better
I can imagine there's a great story to go along with the buttons, someone will fill in some blanks some day

Man that’s a crazy good find, I love the mystery of it as well.

Hi, Interesting button and story . Seems odd nothing relating to women ever gets found . Just a colony of men. TP

That is in amazing condition and with 90%+ of the gilt. Truly special and it sounds like it has some amazing history behind it. Sounds like it's so rare even the experts are baffled! Congrats!
