Ney's stage stop

An old Stage stop has eluded us from finding it's true location the past two decades, Ney's Station first starting around the early 1850's running from Hornitos to Visalia, via Pooles Ferry and then Smith Ferry. Later, It was operated under (Fleming and Bennett Stage Line).

Eventually, teamed up with a local friend (Mark) who had also been searching for it's location, Mark had exhausted all his leads, resources and even hope of ever finding the stage stop, I too was on the blink of tossing this out the window as one of those sites that would remain a mystery hidden away in some plowed field or an orchard.

Together, With reams of research material we pieced together enough information that would put us in the general area. However, One important piece of information was missing and without this important piece it would take us years to locate the stage stop.

Then, One day that important missing piece of information surfaced. Finally, In our hands was the golden key that would unlock the mystery of the true location of Ney's stage stop.

Carefully, As we have countless times before calculated the measurements and applied these to our old maps. Only this time we had an extremely important piece of information that would lead us to the stage stop if our calculations are correct, No room for error and this time we new we finally had it right!

That was almost three years ago, We've since moved on to other sites but nothing can compare with the joy of finding an old lost settlement and not even the finds themselves can compare. Locating Ney's Station was the find, A find of a lifetime and the coins and relics are still there.

Yes, We left the finds there and only recovered enough finds to prove this was Neys stage stop, The owner of the property knows and we now know.

Thanks for your time, I hope someday each and everyone one of you find your lost settlement.

Re: Ney's stage stop

Forgot to mention we also located an old Cemetery, The bodies had been removed around the late 1890's and moved to another cemetery.

During this process, Not all bodies had been removed and still to this day are in that corner portion of the plowed field.

Re: Ney's stage stop

Paul, thanx for the post. But I'm a little confused. You say "we left the finds there" What finds did you "leave there"? And what finds did you make and take with you? Did you work the living daylights out of the site yet?

Re: Ney's stage stop

Hi Tom,

Some of the finds we made are from the stage stop era, If course allot of square nails mostly large iron finds same type of stuff we found at (Sink) Butterfield stage finds the same area you found the 1862 civil war token.

Some pistol balls and bits and pieces of old copper the usual stuff from an old stage stop, No coins surfaced since we only searched long enough to establish this was indeed Neys stage. Also, After the stage route era was over people lived here up to the 1940's which accounts for common trash recovered.

I failed to mention the two (Fleming & Bennett Stage) owners who operated the stage after Neys stage stop cleared over $30,000 in two years running their passenger, mail and express business on that line.

So the site is rich with history, I was talking with Mark last week about us going out there again and detect the main area of the stage stop. Of course we would need to get in touch with the property owner again which he would be more happy and welcome us with open arms.

We have a few sites here we still have not detected, Old settlements from mid 1850 to late 1890s. I know it sounds crazy how would anyone pass up such sites and not detect them, That's the beauty of this hobby that some finds themselves need to stay were they lay to preserve history.

Thanks for responding :)
