We recently moved from Florida to Middle Tennessee. I have had to change gears in Treasure Hunting from beach to the field.
I decided this past weekend to take my son to hunt Indian Artifacts. I got permission to hunt a recently plowed field. Although there had been no rain since the plowing, we were in an area where I was told there were artifacts found in the past. (Of course it came a huge rain after our hunt and as we drove home. I am sure lots of stuff was uncovered when the rain hit but we were already an hour away and had to get home.)
We got on the field early in the morning and started walking the rows systematically. There was a natural spring fed pond in the field also. As we walked, we noted that we started finding chert flakes on the high spots of the field and not much on the lower areas. I figured that this was because dirt has been moved to the lower areas through earth movement by plowing and has covered whatever would have been there while the high points of the field are being uncovered with each plowing. Is that correct or is it that the Indians occupied the higher ground mostely? We picked up lots of pieces, mostly smaller flakes. There were some larger pieces of chert also, some the size of your fist or larger that appeared not to have been worked.
While we found no complete arrow points, we did find three recognizable ppieces or what I believe to be points or broken points that are in the left portion of the first photo. The right row of the first photo are the other items that may be something in my opinion especially the upper left item which resembles pictures I have seen of scrapers.
The second photo is just other pieces. The elongated piece in the second photo resembles an item I saw on a web site referred to as the remnant of a core that had been worked to its fullest and then discarded. It was referred to in the photo on the site I was looking at as an artisan's core. The author said they would work the core until it was down to a point where they would be hitting their own fingers and then discard these leaving this elongated piece like we found.
Can you confirm any of the pieces seen here? The small almost complete point was the first found and my son found it. I found the other two bases. We collectively found the other pieces which we just kept for the heck of it. If you guys can shed light on our finds, I would appreciate it.
We intend to go back to this location soon. There is over 500 acres of freshly plowed field and we have carte blanche to hit it when we want. We are learning as we go.
Thanks!
Jim
