Re: Newbie's first find!!

I'm not sure what it is made of, its heavy and maybe brass. The "3" is actually a seperate piece, I am trying to post a better picture of it. I live in Newport News VA, about 3 miles east of the James River.

Re: Newbie's first find!!

OK...how about a Earnhardt pendant? ;)

I don't know what it is...but a neat find!

Welcome to the forum Sdot!

Nana ;)

Re: Newbie's first find!!

looks pretty old to me, the way the metal on the 3 is smashed onto the backplate....instead of modern rivets

Re: Newbie's first find!!

Sdot,
Looks like some kind of pendant, the orientation of the back might determine if it was intended to be a 3 or something else.

Re: Newbie's first find!!

How long ago did they start making Earnhardt buckles.. ??? ;D
Na,,, I don't know, but I'm sure it is supossed to represent something older than a racecar...
Good luck on the ID, Welcome to the forum, & Happy hunting~

Re: Newbie's first find!!

Can't help but think, because of where I live that it has something to do with the Civil War, I have been researching civil war insignia but haven't had any luck so far. I don't know, maybe I'm crazy. It may not be that old. About six inches from where I found this I also found a Marine Corps Insignia, but not as deep only about four inches. I will be posting pics of it later tonight or tomorrow. Happy Hunting

Re: Newbie's first find!!

Do you think it might be a rosette for a horse bridle?

Check ebay under antique horse bridles. I saw similar items.

This is my first day here and have not even received my metal detector. All of the sudden I'm a wealth of information. :-\

you may be onto something angelo, I'm a friend of Sdot and have been trying to help him ID the find.....the backs of some of the rosettes on ebay closely resemble the back of this thing

welcome aboard

Try this Amigo:

3rd Virginia calvary in Yahoo search.

Hope some Yankee did not shoot the horse in your back yard.

I'm originally from the south. about 300 miles from Mexico City. :D

Re: Newbie's first find!!

I hope it is CW, if you check our peninsula campaign.org, or do a search for civil war battles in Newport News you can find some great information on what happend here in 1862-63. I live within a stones throw of what was known then as the Warwick River, now known as Lake Maurry. There was a big battle here between George B. McClellan and Confederate Major General John Bankhead Magruder. So if there is anything to be found I have a good chance to find it! I can't wait until Saturday, I will have a full day to hunt.
