Newbie's first box of halves

ok. I finished picking out all the silver. I got 6 40%s and 2 90%s. I know... pretty weak, but for me... for my first box... I'm pretty stoked! Still going to look through for 87's, S mints, etc yet...

I already dropped $220 off at a corner bank here. They asked me if I had an account, I said my wife and daughter do (they really do... my 5 yr old daughters savings account). and they said no problem (didn't even verify). But since I had over $100 they charged me 1% fee. I'll be visiting them over the next 3 days now with under $100 each time to dump the rest and not have to pay the fee.

I'm planning on ordering another box of halves again on Monday. I really need to get a box with like 100 silvers, or at least some older coins like barbes, walkers...

Very good for a first box. I would say 50% - 60% of the boxes I get have less silver than that. Still some have more! ;D

Great start Kasteer! If you keep at it you will find the Franklins and Walkers from time to time.....hopefully a Barber too. I still haven't found a Barber, but in this game you just never know what tomorrow will bring.

Good luck on your next box and keep us posted on the results.

That's better than my typical skunky boxes. Keep searching, and you'll eventually hit the jackpot.

Re: Newbie's first box of halves

Thanks for all the support everyone. I appreciate it.

I finished looking through the non-silver halves today. I found an '02D and an '04D...

I read on the "Beginners explanations for coin roll hunting" post that "...all have dollars dated after 2001 were not made for circulation and are worth keeping." I guess these two are good to keep too.

What would these be valued at???

Thanks all,
Eric

From what I have seen,no more than face value.Unfortunately there is little market for halves.

Some people on here keep '02-'06 hoping that in the future they will be worth more than face value, however you will have to decide for yourself whether you want to hold on to them for so many years or just keep a nice example of each for your collection and use the $ you would have tied up in them to search more coins!

I used to save them all until I had a few hundred dollars worth and tried to sell them to a few coin shops, not one would give me more than face for them,so they went back with the rejects.

Same goes for proofs,in my experience,if they are found in a roll they are damaged too much to be worth more than face value. This is based on years of finding them and not being able to do anything with them(sell them).Dealers want them in original packaging or IF they are loose they scrutinize them and find the flaws that I couldn't see. However most of the proofs I have found were heavily nicked and I only tried to take the ones to the dealer that looked great to me.
