Newbie with ??'s

Hi all,
I have always wanted to get into treasure hunting and I am ready to buy my first detector. I have been searching on here and other places but still can't decide on one.
I would be searching Virginia, near the Potomac and I am also near many old battlefields. ( know I need to learn the ettique before I go).
I am willing to spend up to $500 for a GOOD detector and misc. equipment.
Suggestions?
I was thinking about a Bounty Hunter Camo-LS, but then I started looking at Garrett's gear,,,,,,,

Thanks

Re: Newbie with ??'s

Hi Froggie,

I am pretty new at this too. I have been at it about 2 years. I have a Minelab Soverign and a Tesoro Tiger Shark. I really like them both. I find myself reaching for the Tesoro much of the time because its just plain fun to use. Minimal controls - Basically just discrimination, and ground ballance. Turn it on and go. Set the discrimination low and dig everything or turn it up and find mostly coins. Simple and fun and no meters to slow you down. The Soverign is also an amazing detector. I have made equally great finds with both. To tell you the truth all of my best finds have been between 1" and 4" down. Any of the main brands will work good for you I think. I have been reading a lot and If I was starting now I would get the Tesoro Vaquero. Its simple. No meters and programs and do dads to confuse you. If it beeps, dig it. It has excellent discrimination, depth, and it runs on one 9 volt battery. Plus it weighs 2.2 pounds. Also it comes with a lifetime warranty. I think it sells for around 500 bucks too. What every you decide on I hope you have many exciting times in the field and make some awesome recoveries. There's great stuff out there just waiting for you to swing a coil over. Oh, and one more thing: Get yourself a pinpointer as it makes your life sooooo much easier. Good luck.

Hi Froggie,
I agree with CO kid, I like what I see and read on the Tesoro Vaquero, I have a whites IDX Pro a great detector for what your looking for but they quit making them, they make the M6 now but that will set you back a little more than you said you want to spend. I like the Vaquero in that in runs at a higher freq (and super lightweight) which hits better on small gold.
Probably not that big of an issue for your hunting though, we just have more gold here in CO!
You might also look at the Minelab Xterra30 $400 from kellyco

Re: Newbie with ??'s

Thanks for all the good advice.
So,,,,, a pinpointer is really worth the money?
Hmmmm, cuts down my budget since I dont want to spend more than $500 for everything including tools and headphones. Probably be giving you a call in 2 or 3 weeks Tony.

Since you want to go relic hunting buy one of the best...the Tesoro Tejon. This is the choice of many top relic hunters. Check my site or call me and I'm sure we can work a deal.

I see that the Bounty Hunters are all around detectors where as the Tesoro Tejon is for Relic Hunting.
I would want something for all around hunting. I like this one, and your price is with headphones and a digger too!

A second vote for the X-Terra 50, but w/ all the "trimmings" would be a bit above $500, definitely don't think you'd outgrow it anytime soon though :)

Re: Newbie with ??'s

Another one you might want to consider is the Tesoro Compadre. Sells for $180. Its light, only 2.2 pounds. It has a 5.75" coil that will be a breeze to pinpoint with. It has only one knob which turns the machine on and controls discrimination. I have read it is fantasic in iron infested sites. It is by no means a toy. I have read some very impressive reports on it. The overall impression I get from others is that it is fun, fun, fun to use and that's the bottom line for a begginner. When I think back over all of the best finds I've made in the last 2 years, the compadre or the ace 250 or the white's prizm 2 or the bounty hunter would have found them all. It's 10% the detector and 90% where you hunt and how you dig that determines great finds. And remember, if you enjoy the hobby you WILL be buying more detectors in the near future. It's just not possible to only have one. LOL. I plan on buying a Compadre this spring to have around in case someone wants to try mding out and for the kids to use. And, to be honest I will probably use it the most because it will be fun to hunt with. So get one that you like and don't worry about what you would be finding if only you had got another detector instead. Now get out there and have some fun.

Re: Newbie with ??'s

Don't let the Tejon fool you, it is a fantastic coin finder!

Re: Newbie with ??'s

Agian, thanks for all the input from everyone.
After reading reviews, etc.... for a few days, I just ordered my first MD.
It's a little over what I was planning to spend but thats OK.
I ordered a Tesoro Tejon Metal Detector and DepthMaster Audiophone II Metal Detector Headphones, a nice trowel and scoop.

Now I can't wait to get started, time to do some site research for my area. (Stafford Virginia)

Cool!

Re: Newbie with ??'s

What ever you decide to get for $500 , make it a good mid range machine or you won't be happy later on and it will wind up in a yard sale or closet.
Happy Hunting

Re: Newbie with ??'s

Froggie, good choice. You won't regret that purchase.

Re: Newbie with ??'s

I second that.the tejon is a nice step up from the vaquero.learn that machine, research, and treasure will soon follow.
