I have been searching an area along the Niangua river here in Southwest Missouri that alot of old timers say they found arrowheads and various other indian artifacts. I found some interesting rocks and want to be sure I'm not just bringing home rocks..lol

Your pictures are small so hard to 100% sure, but about 99% sure they are just rocks.... No sign of secondary flacking at all.... Look for pieces that have secondary flaking, look at some posted here...... You can start a rock garden with what you have for now....

Did the Native Americans have a waste area for discarded tools that failed while they were making them? The area on which I found most of these items just had tons or rocks of similar shape that looked like they had some handmade work. I do understand now what you mean about the secondary flaking. I will just have to look harder. Thank you for your input.

Mother Nature makes billions of pointed rocks in all shapes and sizes, many times it is very easy to try to make something out of nothing in our search to find artifacts. Good luck on your search........ :icon_thumright:

mimzim, I have tons of worked stuff if you would like me to send you some so you can see up close what worked stuff really looks like.

Oh and welcome to TreasureNet. :hello2:

Thank you I may be getting the jist of what to look for now. Before I just looked at pictures and went out hunting, and I didnt really see until now what the work exactly was. I thought the rocks that looked to be rubbed down to a point were something. I am learning everyday and maybe someday I will actually find something worthwhile. My problem is the river washed up huge amounts of rock onto the shore from flooding and there are millions of rocks everywhere. And the river has worked these rocks into some unusual shapes. I will likely stick to the plowed field and stay out of the river rock for now.

hello Sweetmimzim3!! and welcome to Tnet from Tmodel!! on the eastern highland rim of tennessee.. dont throw your rocks in flower garden, you may still have an artifact in there yet. please take a new set of photos useing micro setting and good light, then go to new post page and it will tell what size photo you can post.. i thank it is 600+ your photos that you posted are 240 by 320 big difference.. all this will help us to see if your artifacts have any rocks in with them. Terry

Just keep looking, everyone starts out this way.It is the best way to learn. Not to step on Peachy's :notworthy:idea, but I could send ya some stuff as well.

Sweet!! you have two mighty good offers from Peachy and Neo!! i would be willing to bet you are supprised at how much a few pieces of worked flint will help.. some of the colors of flint and chert. try looking at some with 1/4 to1/2 inch stickin out from the back of your hand between your fingers, the tip, an ear, or any part you can let a 1/4 inch show. look close at the shape of the flake scars. and last but not least keep coming to Tnet and looking and asking. see you again soon on the net with some good points. PS also you might keep your eyes open for small pieces of bone look at Larson1951 s!! posts he shows a lot of bone that will explane shapes better than i can... Terry

Can we see a side view and a little better picture of the piece in the 2nd picture? It looks like it might be a broken base off of a Point. The rest just look like typical river rock.

Thanks everyone! Here is closer pics of picture 2 as requested.

Oops not sure how the first 2 got so big. This is the only piece out of all that I THOUGHT might be something after hearing all everyone had to say. If someone wants closer of any of the others I will post them.

I agree..looks like a notch on the left..sorta hard to tell. A couple could be remnants of a point, or the debtage from it.

Pictures of the sides and end edges more than the broken end....General shape is that of a broken celt, but only because of the shape in the small picture, everything else looks to me like SRV says, typical river/stream/creek rocks....
