Hey all, I'm a newbie to CRH. Been reading the forum and have learned some good info about the hobby. Got $100 worth of halves today with nothing, dumped those and went to 3 other banks but none had any halves. Going to go out in the morning and check out some other banks. Do you recommend just ordering boxes of halves? And which rolls seem to be more successful, bank wrapped rolls or CRW's?

Oh, I'm also in MD anyone heard any good/bad things about this area?

Thanks!

I've only been in this for about a month, but I've had really good success thusfar.

My success has been through short roadtrips, not boxes. In fact, I don't think I've pulled more than 6-7 keepers from a box yet, and the majority of them have been skunks. Customer wrapped is the way to go...even better if you can get loose bags from banks that keep their coin machine behind the counter (not self-service)

With that said, there are people who make a killing on this forum doing primarily boxes. Depends on your area.

Wish I could be of more help, but the best way to learn what is going to work is to try everything and keep good notes.

Good luck...happy hunting!

Maryland is one of the top 50 states to do coin hunting in. You should do well there. If your budget is less than $500, stick to CWRs or whatever you can get the banks to fork over. Some of these guys and dolls swear by volume for their big successes. Smaller amounts are easier to dump. Good Luck, Jim

Its hit and miss.

My first 10 rolls were String rolls, I got 16 - 40% halves.

I was then dropped to 2 more 40% in about 100 rolls. I then did some CWR's and got 25 40% halves from those, one containing 7 in it and another 14.

So to sum it up, buy them all, the CWR's and the String/Brinks. You never know what you can get.

Picked up just another $200 in halves today, all bank rolled, nothing again. It sounds like ordering boxes is the way to go. Another question for the experienced guys/gals....when you dump the coins do you roll them back up? Most of the banks I've been in so far don't have self serve counters, so I just want to know the suggested method. I heard people mention bags...not too sure.

Thanks,

Jump online and do a search for banks in your area that have coin counters. I guarantee you that you'll find a few near you that have them. The more you do your research the eaiser thsi hobby is.

wrap your coins up.

I am on a 15 box streak for half dollars, not a single silver. I would stick with cwr.

I have a high skunk rate on my boxes. I endured a 33 skunk box run this year, which was proceeded by a 17 box skunk run.

Yes, you will find silver in boxes...but buy all the CWR you can.

Those boxes are still letting you down? I've endured ups and downs but never that long of skunk streaks. You always get boxes from the same branch? I know it doesn't make any sense but I order from two different branches within 20 miles of each other and one produces well and the other is almost always pure skunk.

I grew up in Maryland, and wish for the life of me that I would have discovered CRHing years ago while living there. The Mid Atlantic/North East seems to be the best place to CRH since those places were highly populated in 1964, while the population explosion out West was more recent. Although I've searched over 130 boxes of Halves and my biggest skunk streak was 8. For Halves, I have way better luck with boxes than CWR. For Dimes, I think they're about even with each other. Just focus on doing as much volume as you can, boxes or CWR.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up which areas are better for CRHing. I do wonder why Chicago is not good for CRHing. Chicago still had a lot of people in the 60's. Someone said Chicago is oversearched and full of CRHers. I don't know but Chicago is a big area. Wonder if someone had an explanation why Chicago shouldn't be great for CRHing?

MD should be fine for CRHing. I recall people from VA pulling ok boxes but that was a few years ago so MD shouldn't be any different. Go Ravens!!

Clovis where are you located? I'm guessing CO area? I don't know if it was you or someone else. There should be a ratings thread for which area of the country is good for this hobby so that any newbies don't waste their time. AZ seems by far the worst.

Funny stuff right there that it seems everyone missed. :laughing9:

Yep, Maryland is one of 50 states :tongue3:

However, when I lived in Northern VA for three years, I scored almost as much silver as I'm getting down here in Louisiana (which blows my mind every day I'm here, it's truly been awesome).... But, I digress....

I did well in Northern VA and Maryland both with CWR and with boxes. In fact, I would say I averaged 15 or more silvers per box, but that was three years ago. In fact, it wasn't uncommon to get 30-40 silvers in a box back then.

But, I did manage six solid rolls of 40% back in 2007 in Maryland and two solid rolls of 1964 Kennedys in VA. So, I think you'll have pretty good luck either way.

As far as dumping, the only bank I know of back there with coin counters was Chevy Chase. Not sure if they are near you. We had them everywhere in VA... I'm assuming they still have the coin counters. Didn't even have to have an account to use them with no fees...

Good luck either way!

All the old Chevy Chase banks I have used in my area have terrible coin counters not even worth your time.

Looks like ordering boxes might be the way I have to go. I just have to build up the bankroll I guess. Went to 7 banks today and nobody had any halves. Ended up picking up $100 in dimes and nothing in there either. So I still haven't popped my silver cherry yet! I'm not discouraged yet, it's only been $420 worth of coins. I'm just jealous of everyone on here and their finds! I'm hoping I can grab something tomorrow from a few different banks.
