I was wondering where a person could look for some information to get started hunting some relics? I am absolutly new to the this and have no idea where to start, and I'm not even sure if it is even fesiable living in the great state if NJ. So any information anyone could provide me with would be great. Links, and suggested reading would be grand, and if someone could enlighten me as to some nice starting spots in the state of NJ would be great.

Pugsley, it's always feasible. Research is 90% of the hunt. Your local library is always a good place to start. My understanding is you have a lot of beach area and shipwrecks along the coast. The very 1st thing I'd recommend is finding a local or semi-local club to join. The is a lot to be said and learned at club meetings. Don't be shy and just stand in the background. The other is asking questions-which you have already shown that you can do. I know there are others on this site from Jersey that can probably help in knowledge of the area. Just want to say Welcome to the forum and just take it slow at first or the addiction will grab you by the batteries and won't let go. ;D HH and Good Luck! Can't wait to see your finds.

Thanks for the info there about the clubs and such. I never really knew that any existed in my area, and low and behold to me there is one right around the corner from me.

As for going to the library. What should I be looking for and at? Old maps of the area, old records, or what else. I am kind of stumped on this one.

Also, what would be some good equipment to get started with? I have absolutely no clue what I might need or what I should be looking to buy.

Well, the first piece of equipment is right in front of you. Google search of your area will probably be the easiest. As for the library, look at old maps of your area and compare to newer maps. At least here our old maps show county schools every 2 miles. It also shows old defunct towns. he library also probably has old newspapers for your area-it can give you ideas of old picnic groves or areas where people gathered for various celebrations and functions. Best advise is pace yourself or it can overwhelm you after a bit. Decide just what you want to search for and then expand along those lines. HH and best of luck.

Hit the historical Society. There's usually some seasoned citizens in there that are just dying to tell you all about your town. Plus they will have hundreds of newspaper articles, pictures, post cards all realting to the area. I stopped in my Society and was stunned by the amount of info they had, and I live in a fairly small town.
