All Treasure Hunting
I am writing this thread ,to help those Newbies or ones new to this Hobby,,Guys with new Detectors ,,as well as,, (those that have been Metal Detecting over a year, but are ready to give up) with some places to go to make some old finds..

...When I first started this hobby over 10 years ago,I got the bug right away,,, by finding a couple 40's and 50's quarters and dimes in the first 1 1/2 - 2 weeks....I hunted an old lot where a school built in 1932 had just been torn down and grassed over..
...For the next two + years I might have found 20 wheaties, and only another 2-3 silver coins of mid 1900's........I was extremely disappointed, and ready to give up and sell my detectors.....
I bought my M.D 's at a coin shop in town, and had heard (from the owner) of some local Treasure Hunters bringing him a SH#$ load of older coins.....Even said that one of them had brought in a 3 legged Buffalo nickle that he wanted to trade for a new top of the line Garrett's at the time...The coin shop owner said that he was happy to do the trade ,as the coin was worth much more than the new M.D.
............. I had Long since ,bought every Metal Detecting ,and Treasure Hunting Book he had and they had helped me some, but getting valuable Coins ,as in getting Valuable Property,,, it's all about Location,Location,Location !.....So I asked where these coins might have been found, but the owner had declined to tell me saying he had promised not to tell anyone....He would not give up any knowledge or help in finding older coinage.....None of the Detectorists I had met at the time seemed to want to help...But ALL including the Coin Shop owner ,wanted to know, when I found an occasional old silver.....Where I had found it.. but THEY GAVE ME .NO HELP...........I HAD TO DISCOVER FOR MYSELF and research FOR MYSELF............Now this was long before I owned my first computer ,,, and Before THIS helpful FORUM.
Seven years ago work was hard to come by here, I was on my second month of Unemployment Insurance....Several others were layed off too....I thought I would try Metal Detecting one more time.....If I find any silver or any gold rings......I can sell them to my (Buddy/ Coin Shop Owner )..I remembered the old lot where I had made my first finds, and decided to give it a go.......When I got there I noticed that Construction Caution horses were on the four streets...surrounding this lot........I thought.........This is an older neighborhood.....something should be in that sand and dirt parkway that is tore up.......And I can dig every signal not having to worry about the grass.......or being neat....
I started digging ALL Repeatable signals, and unearthing older, and older coins A/ V McNickle, A / Buffalo McNickle, 6 mercs NcMercs ,..... 3 Silver Washingtons,,,,,,a couple I.H.'s 1905 was the oldest,,,and several wheaties,,,,,24 if I remember right,,,One of them I Remember was 1922,,,,,it was quite corroded as most of the wheaties were.....and looked like it needed professional help but the front was readable 1922 Plain NO MINT MARK By the end of the day ,I had hunted two of the four torn up street parkways that surrounded the old lot...I took my finds to the coinshop,to sell for gas money and ,batteries,etc......Why......Because I needed Money !

Well my (" Buuuddy" Coin Shop Owner) Seen me a commin.....Says well all I can give you is $73.00...
I said "Just for the wheatie right ?" ..........He says......No...........For ALL of them.........That wheatie (1922 plain) is in bad shape,,and not too collectable in it's present condition....WELLLLL duhh I should have kept them......... the 22 plain "alone" is hard to collect in ANY CONDITION I have since learned.............I have been back to the coin shop a couple times since.........Every time I walked in,and there was a T.H. in there......The owner would say....."That's the guy that found that 22 Plain"
Suuuuuure NOW that you stole it from me you want to rub it in...."Thinking to myself"
This Owner had the gall to tell me a story.......That proved his lack of honesty.........(Short Version) Some kids come in after Grandparents passed away.........And wanted to sell some Silver Dollars ........."Give um Much " I asked........Over $2000.00......." He Says".......................Then as they were ready to leave.......The man buy a pack of Cigs.. and as he is paying for it,, I notice he has allot of old change,V's,Sheilds, and Indians,etc......He said......." Thats got to be heavy in your pocket" Do you want to turn that in to paper ?.........................That was the Last time I dealt with my (Buuuddy) coin shop
Owner....

>>>>>>>>>>>>I Still haven't found my first Cache,,,OR my first Gold Ring, but IT WILL HAPPEN

I Found These Last year when an 1800's era church was replacing it's sidewalks....I practicaly destroyed the 2 cent pc. trying to read the date............That was before I knew about TreasureNet and their artifacts and coins cleaning section..

very well stated and good reminders/encouragement for all.thank you mcnickle

sorry to hear about the scam ?:-[ Thanks for the "article" he he It was informative, specialy since I am a newbie. I kinda learned my lesson ALONG time ago that them shops, be they coin shops, card shops or what have ya, are nothing more than "pawn shops" with swindleing owners. I mean how else are they gonna make money by giving a person a fair price. Anyways like I was gonna say, I had a "Walter Payton" rookie card back when I was a dumb 14 years old, took it into a card shop, the guy offered me $80.00 I took it and ran. I later found out the card was worth about 2 grand!!!!!! Now probably worth ?WAY more. Thanks again for sharing your experiece.

You are right Free..........I go back to these tear outs over and over again, before the pour concrete they sometimes add a little dirt or sand around their concrete forms before they pour......Lots of times this added fill comes from the site it was originaly taken, and yarded somewhere else.....My May 12 finds included on this page were found at a site that I had partially hunted before....Maybe the first time I missed the 3 Mercs. and 2 wheaties ?

thanks for sharing your experience and insight mcnickle.you and free have been very generous with your expertise.as of now i have not found any older construction sites around here but you can bet that i am looking for them.i did get permission to search the site of an old reform school (1894) in the area.there is a chance that it has been hit before, but it is also possible that it was not hit hard.the reason i think it was probably hit at least once is that it was turned into a park about a year ago.prior to that it was on state owned land that was relatively unaccessible.it has not been a park for long however ...so i am hoping that metal detecting isn't so popular around here and there are still some things to be found!

...................That sound interesting..........Wonder if you can do a web search, and get an old areil photo of how it looked back in the day....Even old topographical maps can give you an idea where they may have raised the landscape...........Then after a little research......um..... ,I'd be wondering where a reformed boy might hide his stash......there on the old grounds..Awe heck....Just go out and hit it NOW.....time for research and day-dreams , when it's raining.......Happy Hunting !

Thanks, McNickle, for teaching us kids something.

See, you learn something new on this forum everyday. But no so many yearS ago when Beanie Babies were hot, I tried selling mine to those 'coin shops' and what a rip. The ones in the case were $25.00 for sale and he'd only want to give you $2.50.

Course, my most recent experience with the local pawn shop...after I lost my diamond earring detecting (which I looked for but haven't found yet...arrgghh), I decided to get another (shich I take out BEFORE I detect!). Well, he wanted $25 (granted, okay, it wasn't very big), and wouldn't take any less. So I went to the next bigger town, with more pawn shops, and paid $10. It pays to shop around...BUYING OR SELLING!

Cool post McNickle...
You have given some very good advice. I have only been detecting for a little over a year now and have had some help from a few good friends who showed me a few of the ropes... As you stated," Location " is one of the keys to finding something from the past. Ya have to be in a place were history took place, in order to find it... Also about hunting slow, I myself am going to start getting even slower in some of my hunts... I feel that if the center of your coils misses just one square inch of soil, then you have probably missed something, as with many of the others who have come before you...

Sorry to hear about your ordeal with the 22 plain. It's a crying shame some people have to let greed run their lives...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

P.S.>Something for hollowpointred, check to see if your state has a Website for your local historical society. I get a lot of good info from the one here in my state...

at the reform school site, there are the remains of two buildings still there. one built in 1894 and one in 1914, so i at least know where two buildings stood. i tried to google the name of the school with no results.then i googled the name of the park but was unable to find out much on the history of the site. thats a good idea about the historical society, maybe i can find some info through them. if i remember correctly my father has a bunch of books on the history of our city.maybe i could find something of interest there as well.its funny........doing the research is almost as fun as actually swinging a coil! a lot of the bigger older trees in the area have exposed roots and look like no fill dirt was added. i dont know.........it could produce results. i just hope it hasnt been picked clean already......only one way to find out for sure!

To get an idea of what my finds are worth NOW.......I don't take it to the (Buuudy/Coin shop Owner)..........I use my 1997 (Handbook of U.S.C. Dealer Buying Prices)...I find that my (Buuudy/Coin shop Owner) would not likely even give 80% of the prices stated in that 7 year old book.......And IF I were GOING TO SELL any of my finds......I would not take less than 100% of the value stated in that book.....or better yet,,, a more current issue of that book..........Just my 2 cents (1.2 cents after taxes)

The antique, coin dealers and card shops certainly can't pay retail and stay in business. Of course, retail is only what you can actually get someone to pay for an item.

That shouldn't excuse thievery but there really isn't anything such as greed when you are in business for a profit, is there?

Is it was as easy as our anecdotes, Free could just offer to buy an 1843 Dahlonega from the clown dealer and sell it to TH mag!
Both would most likely adjust the price.

Hey Jonster, Who gave you the silly impresion that coin dealers should pay retail ?
When you go into a coin shop, they trip over themselves trying to sell you the most current redbook of retail buying prices . They want to show that they will give you a better deal than that redbook states, right buddy ? They will take a coin that is graded VF Obverse,F Reverse, and sell it just a little under redbook retail as VF.........Now go try to SELL that same coin to them...They will grade it at F,,,and You won't even get 70% of what it is listed at in F grade in the BLUE book of dealer buying prices.....They will try to convince you all day long..That Buying THEIR mercury dime full book collection at REDBOOK is an investment, and well spent money...The only person that will get your money back from this investment is YOUR GRANDKIDS...and they will probably be selling them back to his GRANKID...Most coins are not an investment....Unless you were lucky enough to have cherry picked some 95 D.D. cents and other more rare coins from pocket change,or found some rare or older coins M.D.ing.
I believe it is not good ethics for a coin shop owner to take advantage of someone that doesn't know they have rare coins in their pocket change (As stated in the story in my Above Post).....Just as a coin dealer would not think much of me ,if I were to stand outside ,or across the street offering to beat his coin shops buying prices...........Greed is Greed.
.Honest businesses can, and do survive without taking undue advantage of their customers and clients........Just my 2 cents..(And that's only 1.2 cents after taxes)

McNickle,
A couple of the anecdotal stories in this thread regarding buying and selling a collectible, including your own, do indicate one may tend to believe an individual can get retail value from a trader.

"And IF I were GOING TO SELL any of my finds......I would not take less than 100% of the value stated in that book" - your quote.
Sounds like you need an end user, not a retailer to buy your stuff.

I DID refer to 'thievery'. I did not mean to excuse it with my post.

I realize you ALL know better, and understand the collectible industry. I realize a dealer does not have to be a friggin prick to be in business. It's just sooo easy for people to complain about the way it works without really considering what it take to keep the lights on etc.

If we want to sell our stuff, a dealer is not the place to consider. You don't take your 'garage sale' items into Wall-Mart, do you?

As fas as pawn shops go, most folks mis-understand this business as well. If you are 'selling' stuff to a pawn shop, you are messing up big. The owner makes his money on loan interest, and intends for you to to return for your item. This is were larger profits lie. They'll even tell you they are doing you a FAVOR by loaning you as little as possible, to save interest charges! A bit like the grading scam system you mention.

Is it wrong for him to exploit your short term need for cash at a ridiculous expense? I don't know, don't got there if you don't like it.

I have been in related business' for 25 years. I made my third 'fortune' ;) in sports cards. I made a lot more cash being fair and honest than any of the loser shop guys that were not. A close friend did even better, and he was the epitome of good ethics.
I also have a good friend who owns a pawn shop, and he is as fair as he can be. He has around 200 thousand invested, and is getting around 18% back on his money. That's just great but it isn't without a lot of risk.

I completely agree about the pocket change thing. That is just sick.
I would hope that, after you spoke up at the time and helped the customer stranger, your dealer would see the light and change his ways. Did he?
I guess it's fair to call me an idiot if I believe that happened.

ya, that plain was probally worth aroun 400-450 $$. Theres society for ya
