I'm in the market for my first metal detector. I wil be relic/cache hunting in rural Ohio. My area is covered with glacial drif, which is clay and organic material interspersed with cobble stones. Discrimination is a none issue, all I want is depth and sensitivity. I don't have alot of $ (less than $100), so I'm thinking something used. What would you suggest?

Doc I think that you are going to have a rough time finding something decent fot that money. If I was you I would try to gather another 50 to 80 bucks and start checking pawn shops and ebay. Something like the Whites Classic series would be an excellent starter and you may be able to find one in the 120 to 175 range.

I agree with pitch. But I'll add to the total. Save your money till you can spend at least $200.00. Anything less you have too much chance of being dissapointed, giving up, and into the closet goes yet another cheap detector.
$100.00 worth of depth and sensitivity won't amount to much.
Stick with a quality brand detector. Whites, Garrett, Fisher, etc.

save up for a ace 250 $199 on ebay or east Texas metal detectors best guy I know of, and he does service you can trust him.
i started w/ a old cheap piece of crap and I found plenty of stuff.Just get out there and learn!!!
