Hi all! I'm married to a USAF man and we have three kids. We just bought our first home about 6 miles from Antietam Battlefield - four acres with a Victorian built in 1884 after the original house burned down. The previous owners bought the house in 1954, and the owner before that was descended from the man who received the property in the original 1700's land grant. To put it mildly, the property has a lot of history to it. Two buildings estimated to have been built in the 1700's were just torn down due to condition, and the house itself was used as a lounge and post office for train passengers back in the day. The property is also located on a road travelled by civil war soldiers going between Boonsboro and Williamsport. I was told that the man from the antique shop across the street was allowed on the property once and after a short scan, found a civil war soldier's belt buckle. That was the only time anyone was on the property with a metal detector as far as we know. I've never owned one before, but just bought a Whites Coinmaster and frankly, am loving it! I don't think I've found anything very valuable, but already in the past week I've found some really interesting stuff! In spite of having a lifelong love of history, I don't know much about relics or the finding of them, so this site should be an invaluable resource for me!
