Hi all! I am a new visitor to this site, and to this world (of treasure hunting, that is). I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a decent starting MD, name, model, price, that sort of thing. Should I go use or new? Are there places to buy used ones? I would probably be searching mostly beaches and parks, so I guess sand and grass. I really appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance!

I don't know what kind of sand you are talking about (fresh or saltwater), but there are several very good detectors that would fit your bill, easily. I got back into it a few years ago with a Garrett TreasureAce250. It's reasonable and has an easy learning curve. It's great in parks and on schoolyards, it literally eats coins for the operator. I took it to Florida, but had a hard time on wet sand, it did fine on dry, though. You will get a lot of responses (I hope, anyway), but that is my 2 cents. Welcome to the hobby, I wish you well.

If you're talking salt water, and can afford it, look at getting a multi freq. unit. Minelab & Fisher are two brands that make good land detectors that work well on the wet salt sand.

I used an ACE 250 for 3 years and I loved it. I still use it as my back up. It works great in dirt and dry sand. good luck and welcome to TNet.

the Ace 250 is probably going to be your best bet. it's easy to use, turn on and go, has few problems and is
rather inexpensive. around 215.00 +shipping

ACE 250 is a great starter for land, you dont say fresh or salt water beaches, if your wanting a saltwater beach detector it will have problems there in the wet sand where the jewelry is at, the majority of jewelry is in the water and the wet sand................

Hmm.. well I live in NY so I would think the majority would be salt water beaches. Funny I didn't think that would even make a difference! So much to know... form what i am gathering here, it doesn't work as well down by the water's edge, but our beaches tend to be very packed from the parking lot to the water so I should have sume success regardless. Thanks for the info! I will see about that 250.

You would be surprised how quick rings sink in wet sand.

I see it over and over.... someone says they're new and it's an automatic thing to push the Ace 250 on them even though a budget has not even been suggested. I bought $1,000 Garrett when I started, not a $200 detector, so a first detector doesn't have to be the lowest in the brand. I bet you could find a decent used Explorer in the range of $500 which smokes a 250 and you wouldn't have to spend anymore because you're already high end. The salt beaches.... smooth sailing! Anyway, just something to think about.

Get the best one you can afford. If you decide you do not like metal detecting, then you can sell it with not much lost.

I always bought high end knowing that getting the best tool for the job is the best way to go no matter if you are metal detecting or buying a hammer or wrenches.

I got lucky with metal detectors as the GTI did the job for my first year detecting. Unfortunately my jump into buying a higher end watch didn't work out quite so well and I lost equal to a good used explorer selling it used. (The condition was new) When getting into something new sometimes you win, sometimes you don't.... but you always learn something. ;D

Maybe its just me, or that I read too much into target ID but I've always had better luck with non target Id machines more treasures and less trash in my opinion, may want to look into an excalibur or a cz-21 if you will be doing some serious water detecting. They both hip mount and are waterproof if you decide to start wading. You may have really good luck in freshwater lakes.
if not I really loved my old tesoro eldorado selling that for a whites quantum was about the stupidest thing I have done detector wise.

Just my .02 but I had a really bad experience with kellyco today just ordering a part, so maybe find a smaller dealer to you.
