Detector(s) used
Ace 250
A buddy got me interested in MD'ing, and am expecting my Ace 250 today from Kellyco. I am so fired up about getting my new "toy" that I told the boss I'd be in late tonight. (I work 5pm till 5am) so I could hit a tot lot or 2 before going into work.....

The username????? I love icefishing!!!! But, seeing that the walleyes are hiding in the depths of the Saint Clair River here in Algonac, and there is no ice, I need a new hobby(wife doesnt think so!) So, going to bed, and hopefully when I wake up around 1 or so, my new "toy" will be here!!!!!

Any tips you experienced MD'ers can offer as to the detector or areas would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks for listening to me babble,,,

Mike

Welcome to Tnet IFN. Since the 250 is great at finding coin I would suggest Tot Lots, ball fields, etc. I am sure that you will have great finds to report and I think a second hobby is good to have. Keeps you young and not out womanizing lol. Those are some tough hours to be working, did it for a very short time when I was younger, much younger.

Welcome to the hobby and forum. You'll have a ball. As for where to detect, Garrett has a book called, Sucessful Coin Hunting. that gives hundreds of ideas on where and how. Also start getting Western & Eastern Treasures magazine.

Hi Ice Fishin Nut,
Welcome to the hobby.
I use an MXT. I usually metal detect around Genesee County, just north of you. I like to go out and metal detect the parks and ball fields. However, where I really like to metal detect is “sledding hills”, i.e. places where people go sledding and tobogganing in the winter. These places are the gift that keeps on giving, especially in the spring when it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Even late in the summer and fall, like right now, I still find goodies. It’s like the other people with metal detectors don’t hit these spots, and I have no idea why.

Happy Hunting, Jeff

I forgot to metion....

If you hit the beaches, at least here in MI, turn the discrimination way down, just above iron. I have had, and used, many different metal detectors in various environments. What I have found, as far as the beach goes, goodies such as jewelry and coins, seem to sink fast in the sand. It’s relatively easy to dig deeper in the sand, unlike soil. With low discrimination your detector will go deeper. Also, the earrings that have just a little post, the thing that goes through the ear hole, is very small and may be just gold plated, is very difficult to pick up on the detector, especially if it is deep in the sand. If you have the discrimination turned up too much, forget about it.

Hi and congrats on your new detector. I hear great things with the ace 250.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!!!

Great idea, I know the perfect place and will check it out in the morning after work!!!

That could explain alot about this past weekend..... I was in Lexington and worked the beach Sunday morning. Found 2 dimes and alot of junk! I did find a common push tack down 6" which surprised me because of the depth. Other than that, alot of foil that was marking as coins. I did dig everything that I marked, but it looked like someone went over the whole beach with a huge magnet and sucked everthing good out and left me the 2 dimes and the rest of the junk....... :(

I'll post results of the "hill" in the morning when I get home.

Thanks for all the tips!!!!
