Hi, I am a novice rock hound. I always have been fascinated as a child but now that I have the ability to travel for work I have found myself in Idaho. I am wanting to know which areas are the best to hunt. Also how do I find out about these areas. I am a bit confused on where to go. I would much rather go off the beaten path. I have a folding shovel, rock hammer, safety goggles, and some nice gloves I ordered off line. What other tools will I need. Also want to dive into the realm of fossil hunting as well. Is anyone located around the Grangeville/Lewiston areas? I would love to meet up and have someone show me the ropes. I am a quick learner. I will be here for 4 months working in the ER in Grangeville.
Sorry for all the newbie questions!

Welcome to both Idaho, and a great forum. I'm down in southern Idaho, or would be happy to take you out prospecting. Somebody from up there will probably respond.

I have heard of good opals being found on the Lewiston Grade, the big hill. Also good opals in the Moscow, Idaho area. There is a book written on the subject, "Moscow Opal mines" I think.
