Hello,
You don’t know me but I feel like I know the majority of the members that frequently post on here, I’ve been watching, Reading, listening and learning for about a month.
Here is how it started. (Advanced warning!!!! Grab a seat and a cup of coffee, or escape now while you still can because it is probably going to be a long post.) I will try to be brief, but I’m excited, and when I am excited I tend to ramble.
A little background, I’ve always been the outdoors type, camping and fishing and exploring, and I was born and have been fortunate enough to live my entire life within a 20 mile radius of what I know look at with new glasses as (unbelievable good detecting area.) ok so on with the story, I guess it was probably 6-8 years ago a friend of mine gave me a Bounty Hunter 3 that he had bought and never could get to work. I played with it for about 20 minutes, with some new batteries and had the same luck. About a month ago my son age 9 found it in the garage, I explained to him that it did not work, but he was persistent, so we dragged it out and loaded it with two fresh 9 volts. To my surprise it actual worked, and it made different tones when passed over a penny, a quarter, and a piece of steel. Off he went around the yard; he came back with a bottle cap, a couple nails, and a fishing hook. I went out with him for a bit, and we had a great time, collecting junk, it is very sandy here so digging is a breeze. He took it to my sisters one day to play around in her yard, found a few more bottle caps, and a dime.
One day a few weeks ago I left work early after a meeting and had the whole afternoon to myself, and I decide to try one of the old foundations up on a nearby mountain. There was so much debree, mostly tin roof, old buckets, pots and pans, and old square nails that it went off nearly constantly, I found an old carriage bolt , and in the same hole some broken pottery. There is not much modern trash, but plenty of trash just the same. I left thinking about the fun I had, and started snooping around this forum, and other sites to see what there was available for info on newer detectors. Long story short I started in the $150 bounty hunter range and ended up at the whites MX6. I know, I know we could start a whole post about what’s better, but I like the way it looks, it feels good in my hand and I’ve been having a blast with it, so I’m happy with my choice, and proud to swing it. (Although I need a break from swinging) you guys make it look easy, my arm is sore. I picked it up Friday, and swung it left to right all day Saturday, and Sunday. It felt a whole lot lighter Friday evening then it did Sunday night!!!
Ok I’m going to wrap it up because I’m getting carried away. There is much more to tell, but I’ll save it for later.
Please excuse my novice approach with the pictures, but this is what my son and I found at an old logging camp, it may not be that old, but you would have thought we struck gold cash when we dug it out of the ground at 5 inches. We were both so excited it would have been comical to have been a fly on the wall. The only stamp is one that says LH 59. I am going to go back and take some photo’s maybe I can get some help actually dating the camp, I’m guessing not to old, maybe 1940ish. And I do not know that the piece is that old, actually the carriage bolt and threaded rod probably makes it much newer, I have a lot to learn about dating items. Any help would be appreciated. Also laugh if you will about the 2002 quarter I placed for sizing but I found that one, my one and only coin too date in a parking lot at 1 inch, I was so excited, wooooo hooooooo it rang strong and true, lol. I still chuckle when I think of how much money I have invested in that quarter. But I get it now, I didn’t go crazy, but I spent a considerable amount of money on a respectable detector, I ended the weekend dirty and tired, But as far as I’m concerned I did not find a quarter and a hunk of unidentified iron, I found gold!!!! This stuff is awesome. I look forward to the help and suggestions. Thanks in advance for letting me share, no matter how pathetic my finds are.LOL
