newbie: additional equipment?

Hi all,

I've just discovered this site yesterday and have been reading nonstop. I've always wanted to try MDing and now I'm ready. Based on what I've read so far, I'll get either an ACE250 from Sports Auth or a Bounty Hunter 3300 if I can find it close to the $112 sale price I missed by 7 days (damn!).

Soo... I'm getting a clue that I'll need MORE equipment. Headphones? Pinpointer? Plug-digger? Plug-cutter?

I'd like:

1. A clue for the LIST of stuff I'll need.
2. Suggestions for each item.

Thanx for any tips!
Todd

Welcome Todd

to start out.

The Detector,
a Good Hand Trawel (One that won't Bend)
A Good pair of Headphones.
a Carpenters Apron. (You Can get them for Free at some Lumber Yards.)

And Go for it.

As You Improve, add what you Feel you need.

(Knee Pads, Electronic Probe, Etc.)

Good Luck & Happy Hunting

Jeff

Ditto what Jeff said.

"a" is a must, "b" and "c" when your ready.

After some time detecting you can spend your
life savings on "other" items. ;D

Welcome Todd.

This forum is full of great people who are very knowledgeable. Glad your here.

which headpones?

Thank you all so far... but for question #2...

What constitutes a "good" set of headphones? Does Radio Shack carry anything you'd recommend? Or Sports Authority? I'm sure they come in "boxes" etc, so I won't actually be able to "hear" them work or test them. I'll just take your words for it.

Thanx,
Todd

PS: I just won a bid ($163 with shipping) on EBay for a 3300. So I'll wait for that shipment and I'm on my way.

your Best bet, would be to buy a pair of headphones that were made for detectors.

Also be sure if you need Stereo or Mono phones, or your sound may be in one ear only. unless the ones you get have a switch.

Radio shack phones will work, they may even have a good pair with
a wide tone response, however, I have a pair from my local Radio Shack "KOSS"
I bought them in an Emergency. I also have a pair of KOSS from Walmart, I bought, same reason different year. They both have lousey
Sound.
I have a Pair of KOSS from Kellyco, since 99 they have awsome sound.

It may be I went from Top to bottom so to speak.

They may be fine if your not used to a Good pair.

or it could be I'm hard of Hearing.

Toddwebb, the sooner you can master the probe method, the better. You will have an easier and more successful time at metal detecting. Get yourself a long shank standard screwdriver. Grind the down the sharp points on the left and right so that the tip is rounded. When you get a signal, push the screwdriver into the soil and keep pushing it until you feel it hit the coin. Then put the tip under the edge and pop the coin out.

I bought a cheap pair of earphones that work great. The feature that I like about them is that they have an especially long cord. When I set the detector down it doesnt tug at the phones.

Get the ace 250 and the garrett headphones. make a good combination. Knee pads and apron..digging tool . But soon as possible get a pinpointer !!!!!!!! saves a lot of time and digging . After you pinpointer ,you will wonder how you ever did without it. GOOD LUCK
