Newbie Ace 250 sniper coil question

When you have more than one target under the coil, they will be read as one target. If you have an iron target and a coin under the coil at the same time, the coin can be nulled out by the iron. The smaller coil just makes it more likely that there will be only one target under the coil to try to indentify at one time. Since the coil's search pattern is cone shaped, you can sort of acheive the same thing by raising the standard coil a few inches off the ground, but of course depth will suffer.

And....you can swing that hockey puck coil FAST to compensate for its smaller size and still not miss anything!

You are right on the size...I broke down and got a sniper coil and I haven't used the standard coil since. If I want to cover a lot of ground, I use my other detector, but close in and lots of trash, nothing beats it.

This unortunately is not altogether true, although a coil does pick up extra targets it does so with anything within it's signal radius. Really I don't mean to split hairs but masking which is what we are speaking about here isn't a problem with just those targets which are underneath your coil but any that are within the bubble of energy eminating from the coil end. Thus if a can is on the ground ten inches from your coil but a small dime is say 6-8 inches under your coil which do you think your coil will pick up first or only. So while some people prefer to buy another smaller coil thus reducing the surface area or size of signal bubble surrounding the coil. Still others like myself simply turn our sens. down. This has in most practicality resulted in the same effects, less bubble area as well as less depth which is also what what you'll see with a smaller sniper type of coil. Can I reduce the size of my signals surface area as much as a sniper coil, no, but then I haven't found the need too. I suspect that the sniper coil is just another way that the manufacturers have found to exploit a common weakness of many week end MDers. Those who are unwilling to do such things as turn their sesitivity down or don't know enough to. The usual fear cited is loss of depth, but I can assure you that depth with a sniper coil is far less than depth with an 8 inch coil while sens. decreased to 2-3.

same energy focused in a smaller area -- smaller over all size means less "side area "interferance when close to metal objects --thus you can get closer than with a "stock coil" ---without the metal of the slide or other metal object masking coins that are in the area . --- great for tot lots and parks with playgound equpitment as such -- Ivan

The sniper coil (I use it exclusively in parks and other areas I know will have junk) covers a smaller area.
The sniper coils covers 4.5 inches down, but like was said by another MDer here, the coil, regardless of the size als picks up metal off to the side as well. And if you want to do a little experiment, turn on your detector and hold a coil a few inches ABOVE the coil and not underneath. The coil will pick up a signal there as well. Sure, you can turn the sensitivity down and try to compensate that way, but I find the 4.5
eaiser. You get about 4 to 4.5 inches in depth depending on the ground your working, but that OK as most moderen day targets are within those depth measurements anyway.

JOHN I AGREE WITH YOU. THE SNIPER COIL ON THE ACE-250 AND THE 1500 ARE AQBOUT THE SAME. YOU CAN SWING IT FAST ARE SLOW.

I AM HUNTING TWO SITES NOW. OLD HOUSES. A LOT OF TRASH. 1850-1865. I JUST TAKE MY TIME AND GET A GOOD SIGNAL. AND DIG. MOST OF THE BIG STUFF YOU CAN SEE. IT HAS BEEN PLOWED OVER RIGHT UP TO THE HOUSES. FOOD FOR THE DEER. I HAVE BEEN FINDING COINS ABOUT 2-3 INCHES. THE SOIL IS GOOD TWO. LIKE IT PRESERVED THE COINS. THEY COME UP CLEAN.

I WILL GET
THE BIG STUFF OUT OF THE WAY AND I HOPE FIND SOME GOOD COINS. GOOD LUCK

Something else you want to consider, you can go to custom mode and notch out everything you don't want and leave just coins. So, even though you use the standard coil it won't pick up as much trash. It just depends if you are into relic hunting or coins and willing to forget the jewelry your going to miss.
I only use the 4.5 coil for extremely trash areas or to get around the very edges of houses.

Buy the sniper coil! After some use with it - you won't live without it. I now take it everywhere - but still take the standard coil.
