I know this may be a bit premature, but I just picked up a Brinks box of nickles and pennys to
get me started. They are rotting in my trunk as I speak and cant wait to tear into them
like an 8 year old and a box of wax packs!

Ive been reading the forum for a few weeks gathering tips and info, and just want to say a
big "THANKS" to everyone who has posted for us new guys. I had never heard of this hobby
before, and lets just say the woman was actually supportive of my new hobby... as she put
it.. "so... there is like no cost to this is there? Sounds Cool!"

Wether I get skunked or not, I wont be discouraged!

good luck AB... brinks nickels and pennies will not be solid new stuff so you'll do fine... here, i have been getting solid 2012 nickel boxes, that is never no fun...

Welcome to the forum, don't be discouraged by skunks and solid 2012 rolls.
You can also try ordering half boxes at your local bank if they will allow you to do so.
Hope that your penny and nickel boxes turn out great!

Looks like another sportscards converted crh?? I bet you will enjoy this much more, so will your wallet.

Welcome to the board! The people here are so helpful, I am fairly new as well and have learned a ton.

I hope your boxes are loaded with whatever you are looking for and if they're not, don't give up just get another box

Obviously the prospect of landing on something of value
is exciting, but to be honest I would prob hoard my finds so
I could show them off, haha.

Regardless of what i find, I'm picking up a box of halves from my
local CU this Friday!

Any tips/words of wisdom anyone can provide would be more than
helpful!

When dealing with the banks, Go slow, don't wear out your welcome, and act happy all of the time, those are my tips. There are many more tips out there but I think these are pretty importannt. There are many people on here that can allways answer your questions, and reading the Coin Roll Hunting guide is a givin. Welcome, and good luck to ya.

Well folks, My daughter and I busted through those pennies and nickels with
complete disregard for dinner and her bed time, and came out rather victorious!

The pennies produced a decent amount of wheaties, about 13 (3 from one roll).
Nothing special amongst them, a couple from the 20's in decent shape. We sorted
out all the copper, and the rest will go back to one of my banks at some point over the
next couple of days.

The nickels I found to be painstaking. Not sure if I will do these again. That being said,
we managed to pull a war nickel, a 1943 P, but no Buff's. The clear rolls from Brinks made it easy to
spot the lone silver coin. Everyone had already gone to bed when I found it, so nobody was around
for me to share my excitement, haha.
 

Sly, nice job on the first silver nickel. I find nickels to be very tedious. I have found a way to search a third of a roll in my palm at once, bc i am only looking for silver & buff's. I do them only if that is all i can get.

I would def buy a box of dimes bc find silver is really fun, and you should find some and the box is only $250. Happy Hunting! - Jonathan

I almost forgot, I am pretty sure I pulled a proof Nickel as well. Please correct me if I
am wrong on this. Its a 1964 mint mark D. It looks different from the others I pulled,
has more of a metallic sheen to it, and (what made me notice it) the edge was noticably
raised compared to the other nickels i handled, almost sharp it was raised so high.

I could be wrong but i am pretty sure if your nickel is a proof it would be from Phillidelphia and not Denver.I could be wrong though.
 

San Francisco mint makes proofs S mint mark
 

No its a proof set.it still has the letter in it from the superintendent of the mint.it says they are proofs but they have no s mint mark.
 

I will take a look at it, and upload a photo. All i know is the moment i touched it I
knew it was different from the others. Beyond mint mark, how else do you
recognize a proof?
