I believe that this variety was introduced in 1970, when the fare was increased to 30¢.

Yup no more subway tokens. It kinda sux for tourists. They don't get the full experience of the city if they have to worry about how to put money on their Metro Cards, when they used to be able to buy one token for one fare, and just drop the dang thing down the slot. Now you have to stand in line while some old woman fudges around with the machine, doesnt really understand how to work it and then miss your train because she is slow.
