I couldn't stand it any longer ... I needed to get out for a hunt and It was down to the last hour of the day. I decided to go to an old farm house site that I've hunted pretty hard over the past year just because it was only about a two mile drive. I had my hopes up because there had been about an inch of rain a couple of days ago and the last time I was at this site it was bone dry. In about an hour before dark I found a nice buckle, a D ring, a undateable Indian Head (only my third ever and my first coin find of 2008), and a couple of other relic items. It was a fun hunt and the IH made my day! I am going to soak the IH in peroxide and maybe get the date ... anyway ... thanks for looking!

Is that a shoe buckle? And how old do you think it is?

Hey Master Sarge ... I was wondering about the buckle type myself ... my best guess is maybe harness/tack buckle since it was found in a field/late 1800s farm house site ... would appreciate any guesses.

That thing is sure degraded what kind of ground did you find it in? a very nice start of the new year.
Hey misterbeee ... it was found in a farm field with soybean stubble, very heavy clay type soil that drains poorly and has a tendency to hold moisture quite well. Most copper coins (wheats, IHs, large cents) that I have found have been in very rough condition.
