New Year's Day Gives Me My Best Find EVER!!!
Hello All,
As some of you know, I do just about as much searching at auctions and flea markets as I do in corn fields and woods. Today it really paid off!! It was way too cold and windy (40+ mph winds) to put the coil to the ground today, so the lady and I decided to hit an auction in Louisville. There were a lot of military items there, including some WWII stuff that I collect. As the auction started, we came to realize that the items were selling for way too much, but we decided to stay anyway to see what else would come up. About four hours and a bunch of junky, overpriced furniture later, they said that they would take requests for specific items that people wanted to put up. I saw a couple of antique clocks (another thing I collect) that I was interested in, so I asked them to put them up. The guy said he would get them put up. Another hour later and the clocks still had not been put up and we were ready to go. I went over to take another look at the clocks and decided that I could live without them. I looked up at a table all the way in the back of the room and saw what looked like an artillery shell. After staring at it for a minute, I realized that it was a Civil War James Shell!! I walked back to the table, thinking that it was probably a resin copy, and was surprised once I picked it up... it was heavy!! I brought it up to the auctioneer and within five minutes he was holding it up for sale. He said "You're buying this big bullet." I was happy to hear that he had no idea what it really was, and especially happy when he started it at $10!! There was only one guy bidding against me and he backed out at $20, so I got this original NON DUG James Shell for a whopping $25!!!! I was so happy and excited that I got it, because it is my very first "find" of the new year, and it is my best find EVER! It's even complete with it's percussion striker and nipple. I think 2012 might just be a good year after all! I think I might put my auction ticket that just reads "bullet" in the display with the shell . This one will be hard for me to top. Thanks for looking and Happy New Year!
