New Year's Day Gives Me My Best Find EVER!!!

Hello All,

As some of you know, I do just about as much searching at auctions and flea markets as I do in corn fields and woods. Today it really paid off!! It was way too cold and windy (40+ mph winds) to put the coil to the ground today, so the lady and I decided to hit an auction in Louisville. There were a lot of military items there, including some WWII stuff that I collect. As the auction started, we came to realize that the items were selling for way too much, but we decided to stay anyway to see what else would come up. About four hours and a bunch of junky, overpriced furniture later, they said that they would take requests for specific items that people wanted to put up. I saw a couple of antique clocks (another thing I collect) that I was interested in, so I asked them to put them up. The guy said he would get them put up. Another hour later and the clocks still had not been put up and we were ready to go. I went over to take another look at the clocks and decided that I could live without them. I looked up at a table all the way in the back of the room and saw what looked like an artillery shell. After staring at it for a minute, I realized that it was a Civil War James Shell!! :o I walked back to the table, thinking that it was probably a resin copy, and was surprised once I picked it up... it was heavy!! I brought it up to the auctioneer and within five minutes he was holding it up for sale. He said "You're buying this big bullet." :laughing7: I was happy to hear that he had no idea what it really was, and especially happy when he started it at $10!! There was only one guy bidding against me and he backed out at $20, so I got this original NON DUG James Shell for a whopping $25!!!! :headbang: I was so happy and excited that I got it, because it is my very first "find" of the new year, and it is my best find EVER! It's even complete with it's percussion striker and nipple. I think 2012 might just be a good year after all! I think I might put my auction ticket that just reads "bullet" in the display with the shell :laughing7: . This one will be hard for me to top. Thanks for looking and Happy New Year!

Re: New Year's Day Gives Me My Best Find EVER!!!

I'd bet the consigner wasn't to happy with that price. Great find , knowledge is the key when going to auctions.

I'm glad you weren't there too  . Considering how low I was on cash yesterday, you might have gotten it for $60 :laughing7:

Thanks for the replies everyone! HH!

Re: New Year's Day Gives Me My Best Find EVER!!!

you done very good, congrats. I would think the consigner didn't know what it was or it wouldn't have been in a open public auction house.

I agree, Nova. Judging by all the WWII Veteran items that were there, I would guess that it was an estate that the family just wanted to get rid of regardless of the prices. The funny thing is that this shell was the only thing that I could afford last night!

I think you're right! lol. Hey, I think it's still muzzle-loading season here in Indiana... Seeing as how the James gun was a muzzle-loader, I wonder if it's legal for me to use this while hunting deer :icon_scratch: . On second thought, maybe a bad idea...

Re: New Year's Day Gives Me My Best Find EVER!!!

WOW killer deal that shell is worth some bucks and you hardly ever see them dug complete!

Re: New Year's Day Gives Me My Best Find EVER!!!

Yours looks much better than the one that sold for $1295, WTG!! Great score!

Re: New Year's Day Gives Me My Best Find EVER!!!

I agree. That one looks like it may have spent a bit of time outside. I have to say, this is the most valuable thing that I have ever found (besides the lady, of course  ). I think 2012 is going to be a good year after all!

Thanks for the replies everyone!
