I finally did it friday, stepped up from my whites prizm III to a new XLT, I bought it on friday and studied it and went out today, didnt find much except a few clad coins and a LOT of trash.

I am sure I will have a lot of questions but I think the one I need anwsered most to begin with is about all the trash I was digging, I thought for now I would stick with the basic programs until I get a feel for it and see how it goes and in both coin and coin/jewelry I would get good signals but they would jump from maybe 75-80 to 90 and they always seemed to be iron or trash but when i was digging coins the V.D.I. would only jump around maybe 5 #'s or so. So am I on the right trach that if it jumps around even though it still seems like good V.D.I. #'s that it will probably be trash? I dont mind digging those iffy signals but when you spend most of your time on the ground digging iron that I am obviously doing something wrong, those shouldnt be iffy signals.

any help/advise would be greatly appreciated concerning the XLT,even if off topic.

I know it will take a lot of time getting used to this machine but I am already starting to get familiar with it

I find that "most of the time" when the VDI jumps around by 10 to 15 or more it's typically trash, that combined with what the bar graph has to show and whether or not I get a solid tone. Just keep in mind they are indicators, I'd hate to miss out on a good find just because I was too lazy to check it out.
I stayed in coin mode for quite a while until I got used to mine. Didn't dig much iron at all. As I got more familiar with it I started playing around with more settings. Relic mode gives me maximum depth. There are lots of programs out there you can use to enhance your searches to.

I agree if the vdi numbers are jumping around more than 3-5 #s it is usually a trash target, or 2 targets close to each other. the way to find out is to raise your detector about 3-4 in. off the ground and sweep the target again from different angles. this will show if it's more than 1 target. that is also a good thing to try if you are having problems pinpointing the target.......hope this helps and HH
