I bought some high concentrate vinegar for a cleaning project and when I brought home an encrusted shield penny from the beach I wondered how in it work on it. It sure got rid of the crud. And the zinc.

Anywhere the vinegar could reach the zinc it ate it. Clear through the coin! The copper cladding was peeling off like foil. But it sure was clean and shiny.
