After reading the article in WET, I tried coin roll hunting for the first time yesterday. I bought $100 of halves. I read the "beginners guide to coin roll hunting" on this forum to get an idea what to look for. I also saw somewhere to save 1987 P & D for some reason. I can't remember why. I did notice that those 1987s are a different color then the rest. Is that why I should save them?

Here is what I kept.

2 1987 D
1 1957 Franklin
1 2004 P
1 2006 D

Are those actually keepers? If so, what else should be looking for?

Thanks for any help.

Thats pretty good for $100. Mainly I keep anything 1970 or earlier (silver), and the proofs.

Great start WB!! Congrats on the Franklin. As you probably know that one is 90% silver. A keeper for sure. You might just want to send it to me to double check it.....ha! J/K

The 87's were not minted for circulation (color makes no difference) so your thoughts about keeping them are correct.

Good luck on future hunts. Keep us posted.....

Happy Holidays

yep, they're all keepers. The 87's were only available in the mint set. they were not released for circulatoin. Also, everything upto 1964 are 90% silver and the 1965-1969 and the 1970-D are 40% silver (there was no 1970 "P"). And all "S" mint Kennedy's are "Proofs". The 2001 P was not released into circulation either. Also, all dates past 2003 (I think) were not released for circulation. So there is a lot of different "keepers" in the half dollars. You did very well for buying such a small number of coins, most buy $500 or $1000 at a time.

there are interesting finds in all denominations. I find about 10 wheat pennies per $25 box of pennies.

NC-Joe was correct! However, in looking up the price of a roll of 2007 half dollars, for that other post, I stumbled across something interesting.

You can now get a roll of the 2001P's, which were not previousy released by buying them directly from the US mint in a two roll set for $32.95.

Follow the below link and you will see the add for them.

Anybody gonna get the set?

actually, save the 2002 and newer halves. that is a redbook typo saying the 2001P was nifc.

Actually it is correct, the 2001P was not released, until the mint started selling them by the roll in 2006, the only way to get the 2001P was in a mint set. The price has dropped in half since the mint started selling them.
