New to the site. What is it?

Hey guys, just found this site yesterday and joined earlier today.












I found this in an old shed on my grandparents property. I have no idea what it is, but I'm sure at least one of you do. Has a spring which is broken with the knob to increase or decrease the tension on the spring. The rod sticking up is threaded. Sorry about the poor lighting. Thanks in advance, Dave.

Thanks for your replies. More are definitely welcome if anyone else has some insight. I have really enjoyed the site so far. Will probably buy a metal detector in the near future. I've been wanting to pick up a new hobby and seeing all of the interesting stuff you guys find is really cool.
