As with many I have read and read this forum. I have settled on the Fisher F5 and a good set of headphones too - I was looking at the Ace 250 but seems to lack room for growth so I have landed on the F5 - is it worth the extra$.

Am I on the right track between the two - will I be able to use the F5 as a rookie out of the box - with some help form all of you :-) I want something my daughter and I can do while on camping trips and other times too.

I live in Michigan so will be in farm fields, parks, fresh water beaches and the like. Everyone seems so friendly here and so helpful. Thanks in advance - Mark

BTW - they guy Tony from Colonial in Ct - good place to purchase from?

Thanks again!

The F5 is an awesome machine. There is a lot of info on here about it, lots of tips and how-to. It's a relatively easy machine to get started with, and you can grow with it for a long time. You have made the right choice, in my opinion.

As far as the guy you mentioned being good to purchase from, I've never done business with him. But I will tell you this: If he has been selling on here for any length of time, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him. The members here will separate the wheat from the chaff very quickly, so to speak. If he's been here for a while, then chances are he's good to deal with. :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:

Happy Hunting!

Thanks so much - I am really looking forward to getting started. I appreciate you taking the time to respond - it is very helpful.

A little more learning curve on the F5 than the ace. Still not to much for a newbie though. Read the manual then go out and dig everything till you feel confident as per what the machine(tones and ID) are telling you, even then dig the target if your in doubt. The ace is a good machine but you will be less likely to out grow the F5 soon. The ground balance will make it a bit more versatile(salt beaches etc). Good luck.

Sounds like my hands will be sore from digging - ha. Thanks for the tips. I watched a couple of vids on youtube and they help. Tony from TC Detectors said I should get the Teknetics Omega 8000 because it is lighter - seems to be similar but different with not as much customization available plus no additional coils available? Still thinking the F5 after seeing the vids - probably splitting hairs between the two and not sure the 8000 is worth the extra $100?

I have been using the F-5 for about 2 months now and it's really a good machine. Some tips: After you ground balance it set the tones to d3 or d4 for better audio separation. Also use as much gain as soil will permit. Recheck you ground phase occasionally and hit phase lock to equalise with immediate soil comp. Also you can buy thin vinyl covering in the fabric area of Wal-mart very cheap. Cut pieces to fit over your ID on your machine, keeps it looking new. You might have to wet the vinyl a bit to make it stick. It a great machine, you will love it once you learn it. Hope this helps. Cliff

Thanks a ton Cliff - great tip on the vinyl. I can't wait until the weather breaks here. Funny thing is in December I met my friend who lives in Plano for a hunting trip to Nazareth Texas and you all had more snow in Plano/Dallas than we had in Michigan....ha!!

This seems like a really great detector and I am excited to get it. Hope I can get the hang of it - what headphones are you using - if any?

Thanks again,
Mark

In Midland - about two hours north of Detroit. That is a great idea - thanks a bunch. Just waiting for the snow to melt - soon!!

You are talking 2 different people for dealers.
Tony is with TC detectors.
Rich Runs Colonial and it is top notch.
