New to site

Hi I'm new to this site. I live in South Mississippi. I have been detecting for let's see a long time about....one month maybe two. I have a X-Terra 505.

Hello! I am new to Metal Detecting as a hobby. I have a question and will have many more in the future. The question I have is regarding Metal Detecting coins. My brother-in-law loaned me a Famous Trails (Cheaper) Metal Detector and I went out and tried it for the first time today. I through a few coins on the ground and I could detect the coins, but once I buried one on it's side, the detector would not recognize the coin. Is it just a cheap machine or do I not have it set up for buried items?
