Hi, My name is Mike and I've always been interested in Metal Detecting since I was younger and I've finally decided to jump feet first into the hobby. I don't have my MD yet but I'm planning on getting an Ace 250 after reading all of the great reviews around the web and on these forums. Seems like a good beginner unit.

I know there are a few detectorists here working the Chicago area so I thought I'd see if anybody had advice for me. I'm mostly interested in hunting for old coins and jewelry.

My first inclination is to hit some of the parks and forest preserves in the area. I'm in Rogers Park near some beaches and though they seem to be pretty trashy, I think there might be some good hunting opportunities there too.

There are also a lot of older houses in my neighborhood and I've been thinking of knocking on a few doors to see if they'd allow me to hunt their property. Doubt that will be very productive but you never know. There area also a lot of older apartment buildings w/ good sized yards and I'm thinking about hunting them without permission. I figure with a bunch of different tenants, they'll just assume that someone gave me permission. Is that a bad idea?

I've been reading up on all of the digging techniques to avoid damaging the ground, so that shouldn't be a problem. I've also been studying some old maps of the area and finding a few possible spots that might be fun to hit...

Anyway, I just wanted to say Hi and see what the local community was like. I should have my MD in the next few weeks and I'm eager to get out there hunting. I'd love to partner up w/ someone from time to time also.

Thanks for reading!
Mike

Welcome to the forum and the hobby. The Ace 250 is a fine starter unit and some would say good for all dry ground. It has a lot of features for the price for sure. Garrett has a book called Successful Coin Hunting that you should read to bet started.

Good Luck,
Sandman

welcome to the madness :tard: :tongue3:,your more than welcome to come out and play sometime

Great choice of machine. I found a lot of cool stuff with my Ace 250!!! Bomber is the man to talk to about group hunts. If we setup anything up before you get your Ace, you are more than welcome to use mine.

Hey Mike, welcome to the club  The Ace 250 is a good detector just ask TF, he kicked my butt with it a few times!! :tard: and Bomber is the meeting master! Keep in touch and you are welcome to hunt with us anytime!! :icon_pirat:

Get out and hang with Fiend, he's rookie of the year and Goio is master of the deep and elusive. You can't miss when you hang these disciplined md'ers. As always, if you make out past the Fox River, lemme know and I'll hit the dirt with you anytime I can.

Hey Mike,

Welcome to the T-Net forum and to metal detecting. To address this particular concern:

There area also a lot of older apartment buildings w/ good sized yards and I'm thinking about hunting them without permission. I figure with a bunch of different tenants, they'll just assume that someone gave me permission. Is that a bad idea?

Yes, it is a bad idea. Never detect someone's house or apartment without permission, especially in "those" parts of Rogers Park. You know what I mean? Even though technically the city owns the grass parkways, don't dig there without permission either. It's bad detecting practice. Always get permission.

The Ace 250 is a great choice. It's very easy to use and offers a lot of bells and whistles (literally). I used my Ace 250 for a few years before upgrading and have found hundreds of dollars in clad with it, a few silver coins, lots of gold and silver jewelry, and other cool things.

Feel free to bombard this forum with questions. I will help you out as much as I can, and I'm sure TreasureFiend will too. Both us us have used the Ace before with great results.

North Side respect!!!

Joe
