Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
Hi, Just found this site and am looking for input as to what type of metal detector to buy. I'll be hunting on the beaches in Maryland/Delaware and along the East coast of Florida. Not into scuba diving but from what I've been reading it seems to suggest that I want a detector that is waterproof. I've read the minelab Excalibur is a great machine, just not sure I want to fork out the $1500. Haven't ruled it out but would like to hear from others as to alternatives or if you have a minelab is it worth the cost. Thanks for your input and opinions..............

Welcome from florida.

For beach hunting the FBS technology (E-Trac, CTX3030) is probably the best choice, but they are heavy and expensive detectors. CTX3030 is 5.2 lbs. The e-trac is not waterproof only the CTX3030 is. If you are not a diver, or if you do not intend to search directly in the water, stay away from the Excalibur - they are very slow machines! You can also consider Garret AT Pro - it is waterproof and many people says it performs well on wet sand.

Fisher F5 is also very good detector with adjustable ground balance, which is the most important feature for beach hunting. But it is not waterproof.

The Excalibur is one of the best for Saltwater hunting. It's what some of the top beach/water hunters use, sensitive to jewelry, and has enough discrimination to eliminate those pesky nails and bobby pins.
