Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Have always been intrigued about metal detecting and have always wanted one to play with. This past weekend I purchased a Teknetics A 2000 and a cheapo pinpointer. I know of a few sites to look around, but I am very inexperienced. Anyone with experience around here willing to teach me a little? My 8 yr old daughter is enthralled with this whole looking for old stuff thing and wants to dig on every hit no matter how unlikely it is to find something! So far its been a lot of fun! At the very least it allows me to spend time with the kids and get them outside!

I live in Collierville Tn. But most of my family lives in Senatobia so I'm there practically every weekend. Where in Tate county are you?

Hello,
I am so excited you live close to me! I live in Germantown and need a buddy/buddies. Are u interested? My husband doesn't like to go, but, I love it. I am waiting for my coil cover to come in, and then I am ready!

Jfrush, I live just west of Senatobia and would enjoy meeting up one weekend!

Stillooking, I'm not sure if you were talking to me or J, but I'm always open to going out!

I work in Memphis and would be able to meet up during the week after the time change. I'm currently limited to weekends only if I want to go out hunting.

I'm not sure if either of you are familiar with Arkabutla dam or its history, but when the dam was built, the govt. Moved the entire town of Coldwater, MS to a new location in the 40's. I'm working to see if I can get permission to hunt the old town location. Hopefully I can! I'll bet it's full of goodies!

Hi there,
I am looking for anyone that wants to go. I am so excited I have found 2 people close to me. Just name the day, and I am ready! I have to wait till my coil cover comes in. Hopefully within the next week. Other then that, I am set on ready!
Thank you!

Lewismug, welcome to Treasure Net from Columbus, Ms.

Stilllooking, do you know of any places in or around Memphis that we can visit?

Do you even need permission to hunt the location of Old Coldwater? I've been there a few times and was under the impression it was open to the public. I've also hunted the Trade Days field the past few weekends.

I hunted the trade days field this past Sunday! Yes, you do need permission unless I am mistaken. It's on land that is now taken care of by the Corps of Engineers and is a part of Arkabutla lake in some way. I remember seeing a sign at one point that said something to the effect that taking artifacts from the site was illegal. I go by there everyday on my way into work and will leave early enough in the morning to see if I can find it again.

I know they have a form you can fill out to get a permit to hunt Sardis or Arkabutla, maybe thats where you can get info on the Old Coldwater land.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers -- Vicksburg District (It says Vicksburg district but this page also covers Sardis and Arkabutla)

Did you find anything good at trade days?

Thanks for the link! That's just what I need! I saw a post somewhere about needing a form to hunt Arkabutla and was going to try to head over there this weekend and find out more about it. There is also a permit on that page for firewood cutting. I may put that to use as well! I'm about to start building a shop in my back yard and could use a few 20'-25' timbers!

Trade days.... It was very cold, the wind was howling, I had to give my gloves to my daughter, and my wife was waiting in the car! I hunted for about 30 minutes or so and found too many aluminum can fragments, a few old metal coke bottle caps, some wooden dominoes (sitting at the base of a pecan tree), and one thick washer. My daughter "found" a bunch of pecans (she loves them) and the first one I cracked open for her had a big fat worm inside! She dumped them all back out of the bag and swore she would never eat another again! Although 20 minutes later she ordered a cup of butter pecan ice cream from Baskin Robbins! I wish my memory was that short!

Hi lewismug, I live in Hernando and would like to find some "good" places to hunt as well. I did hunt a couple of hours near the Coldwater river. If you notice, coming up north on Hwy 51 and as you cross over the river, there is a ridge/hill on the north side of the river were there is a boat launch. During the War Between the States there was once a cannon placement on that hill top. I'm sure it's been hunted repeatedly but could still be holding something. There was also a bit of skirmishing around the Coldwater railroad depot and I believe the depot was located somewhere near where the tracks cross over Hwy 306 but haven't investigated any further. I know some folks in Coldwater and I'll ask them about possible points of interest to hunt. Keep in touch, ok.
Take care, Bob.

Thanks for the info Bob! That sounds interesting. I've always wanted to hunt some of the old battle sites!

If any of you guys are still looking to go hunting, I'm all ears! Been really busy lately and things seem to be slowing down a bit. Stilllooking and OleMiss, you guys still interested?!
