Been thinking of doing this for some time now, finally went to a bank last week and opened a new account (buy bank), and ordered my first two boxes of halves. They said it was too late and I wouldn’t get them till this Thursday, but then they called Saturday to tell me they were in for pick up.

BOX #1

1967 40%

1976 Bicentennial – Gold Plated - Are these worth anything?

1981, 1999 & 2000 s Proofs – the 1981 is very nice looking with Kennedy’s head duller against the mirrored background?

1972 that looks like a Proof but no mint mark. Are there Proofs without the s?

Also 6 others that look very close to Proofs 1999-2001 but P & D?

And another 6 that look BU I’ll save to start a collection.

At least it wasn’t a skunk for my first box.

BOX # 2

No silver

2003 & 2004 – These are NIFC right?

1971, 1990 & 2000 that look BU - As a newbie these look like saving, but I may change my mind.

When MDing if I am not finding much I need to cover more ground, so went to another branch and ordered two more boxes, so I will try four a week. Also picked up 8 CWR while there but they were skunks.
Did find it a little bit of a hassle to dump at my main bank today. :( Teller had to count rolls to give me cash and didn’t like it. Do you guys normally exchange for cash or deposit and withdraw a day or two latter?

I know there are a lot of questions in this, but am trying to learn. ??? Thanks in advance.

Nice little mix there for your first time out.

Now, to answer some questions:

1. Gold-plated clad halves are worth just about face value since the amount of gold plating is extremely minute.

2. I'm not sure exactly when the Philidelphia Mint started adding mintmarks to their coins, but I'd feel safe saying it's probably a proof from there.

3. All clad halves dated 1987 and 2002-present are NIFC. I think a certain mintmark of 2001s might be as well, but I'm not 100% sure.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Great answers except for part of #2....Philadelphia started putting the "P" mintmark on thier coins in 1980 but you'll never find a modern proof with a "P" mintmark as they will all have an "S" mintmark.

The original poster also has some great "banking" questions that I would like to know the answers to as well......I always try to buy CWR of halves, and have done very well accumulating silver that way, but have recently decided that I'll take the plunge and order a couple boxes.

I have a buy bank that has already told me no problem with ordering boxes but I haven't yet decided on a dump bank. As previuosly asked, when dumping halves (and I already know there are no counting machines around me so I'll be re-rolling) do you just deposit that back into the bank or leave with the cash? I'd really like to leave with the cash so I'll have money to play with on CWR rolls until my new 2 boxes come in. Just curious.

HH all!

Yesterday, when going through halves from the Loomis boxes, I found several P and D halves that have such mirror-like surfaces that they could be confused with proofs. Though I only recently started going through boxes, I was suprised to see P and D halves of this quality in circulation. I kept several of them for my halve collection in progress. I classify them as BU grade, they are really beautiful specimens. The Brinks boxes, a lot of those coins have large circular gouges from the rolling process at the one end. Many of those in the center of the roll were damaged from previous rolling processing.

I dump for cash only and the tellers don't seem to mind. No banks within 50 miles of me have a coin counter, so I have to reroll all coins before dumping. I buy boxes from several banks that I do not have accounts with, I must carry cash to buy. Around here it's such a small town region that the tellers are friendly to everyone, whether you have an account there or not. One bank that I buy a lot from, but do not have an account with, they hold for me any halves and customer wrapped rolls that they get. Yesterday, they had a big stack of large dollars that they let me look through, all were CuNi clad.

I deposit some of the cash and get back some. If I need more I hit the ATM.

I want the tellers to see deposits rather than just the exchanging of coin for cash.

My bank has a coin machine that I use though. I just hand the tellers a receipt.

I'd suggest some form of a deposit with each transaction.

Thanks for the helpful replies. Need to go get a good book on halves :read2: any suggestions?

When I took the coins to the dump bank, I had rerolled them and put them into a big plastic bag from the bank that holds $1000 in halves. The teller kept pushing toward which account to deposit to, once I got her to understand I wanted to cash (with the help of another teller) she said she would have to count them. Luckily they only counted the rolls, but Still not an easy transaction.

Went to another branch today and talked to tellers, they said I should be able to seal these bags and put my account on it, then if they should be short they will just charge my account. This would be a lot smoother, just wish the other branch was the same, I didn't really want to dump 4 boxes at one branch but Also don't want to deal with grumpy tellers.
