I was just reading a report about the newest tick virus found in the US. It has been called the Bourbon virus and thus far there is no treatment.

Symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, muscle aches and a general feeling of malaise. But while similar tick-borne illnesses typically are treated with antibiotics, this disease is transmitted by a virus, and therefore won't respond to the medication. The virus has been labeled as "fast-moving and severe, causing lung and kidney failure, and shock."

Familiarize yourself with Permethrin if you metal detect in areas with ticks. You can purchase this in many stores. Wal-mart carries it.

Sawyer Products Permethrin Premium Clothing Insect Repellent, 9-oz Aerosol - Walmart.com

You spray it on, let it dry and you are pretty well protected. If a tick climbs up the outside of your pants it dies. If it goes up inside your pant leg it dies. Same with your shirt. Spend some of your hard earned clad change and get yourself a bottle and be safe.

Happy New Year everyone.

News that ticks me off. I swear there is some hiding villain engineering these bizarre and deadly creatures out there.

Just another thing to avoid. Dont try to get on and airplane with a tick they will say your trying to start an epidemic and taser you LOL.

Hello beez0404,

Thank you for sharing this important information.

Regards,

Where would it be most active?

A farmer in Kansas recently died from the virus. It had doctors and scientists baffled for weeks. They finally located the virus in his system and also the area of the tick bite.

back in November I got nailed by a large black legged tick. 1 week after on election day the symptoms started with balance and confusion issues and within 30 hours I was in full body convulsions with severe dehydration and fever over 102. it carried 3 diseases-- LYME, ANAPLASMOSIS, and EHRLICHIOSIS. about as much fun as ebola but with a better recovery. will be using Permethrin in the future---- does it work on bears, bobcats, skunks, coyotes and *******es who whine about "digging up the place"??????

Thx for the update Beez, good info to have.

Rich, with as much hunting as you and Frank do you definitely need to seriously consider treating your clothing with it. Even in the summer if you're in shorts if you soak your socks in it I am told they almost always die before reaching the top of the sock. But if not will die shortly after and before attaching themselves to you. I know a tickophobic who even soaks his sneakers so he starts killing them as they're headed to the socks...LOL As for the wildlife you're on your own on that one. I think the only one that would concern me up where you guys hunt are the coyotes which seem to be everywhere. And they are, for the most part, timid around humans.

I agree that Permethrin should be used anytime you are in a tick or chigger infested area. The Bourbon Virus thing is bad, but nothing to get freaked out over. There has only been one confirmed case of it in the United States so far. If you live in the Kansas area, I would be very careful. There are probably a lot of undiagnosed cases of this virus, just because it has never been seen before in the Western Hemisphere.
