Metal Detecting
Hello all, ive been browsing the forums for several months to get back up to speed on metal detecting and the new gear associated with it, i ran my dads old machine for several years when i was younger. From about 12 untill i was about 17, i went door to door and asked if i could metal detect yards and it was a heyday. I wish i could remember what his machine was, it was real good looking back at my finds. I covered as many old yards as i could walk to, somewhere around 200+ and over the early years dug hundreds of silver coins. Mostly dimes, a small handfull of barbers, most of them where mercs, and of course some roosevelts. I only found a few quarters, 1 barber, a few standing liberty and 1 liberty 50 cent piece. The wheaties numbered upwards of 4-500, and 13 IH pennies. His machine was orange-ish and white with an indian on it, does anyone have some insight to what it was? I would be interested in purchasing one just for nostalgia, granted i dug a lot of trash too, but it was a good machine and hot on silver for sure. Im excited to be a part of the group, i did a lot of research on detectors over the last 7 years or so and finally was able to squirrel away enough money to buy one. I purchased a garret AT Pro, and pro pointer, so far so good. If i would have had this thing in my hands back in the day who knows what else i'd have dug up. The first time out with it i had to compromise because theres a lot of frozen ground here still. I dug up a 100 year old drop forged cobblers hammer head at 16", a cool copper ring, 1 silver dime(roosevelt) and $4.70 in clad over a 6 hour period at an old sledding hill across the street from a local high school built in 1948. After some post hunt reflection i realize that im sweeping the coil too fast, its the stock Pro coil 8.5x11DD i believe. I ordered a package that came with it and the 5x8DD. Im thinking i should try the 5x8 and slow down..any thoughts? I realize in my new found excitement i was probably swinging too fast. What i was doing is swinging that big coil and if i hit a nice tone id rescan it to see if it was repeatable, if it was id dig, if not id move on. In hindsight moving too fast probably made me miss deeper targets, and probably silver as well. I have some leads on an old school built in 1867, my brother actually owns the house that was built on to it, his back yard was the playground and is 1.75 acres :hello2: wish me luck! I will try to figure out how to post pictures etc.
