new site test yields 40's Lionel train engine car, ashtray, big copper & lead +$10
I went with a buddy to an old home site I've been wanting to do that's near a creek for a quick test run & it was just such a beautiful day to do it today so we went there. There is some sort of foundation or basement or ? It's approx 12'x20' & is very overgrown with ground cover vines. Inside the the foundation it's 2.5' deep + filled with dark rich mud, rocks, bricks & old cement/concrete chunks. I think this is much deeper that 2.5' as it sits on a "mound" below a hill a good 10' above the area around it "the area between it & the creek". Like I said this foundation is on the side of a hill or right at the base of a hill that sits opposite of the creek. The "foundation/hole" seems to hold water as once I dug about 12" down water started seeping into & half filling the holes I had dug. So I really kinda need a pump & move a lot more rocks & concrete pieces but I really bet this "foundation/hole" holds some sort of treasures! Seems tho like it doesn't drain or drain well as the ground near & around isn't really muddy at all. What this structure exactly was I'm not sure but old aerial photo's show something like a single car garage sized structure there.
Anyway less than 5 minutes into the hunt & after clearing out some big chunks of rock/concrete in the center area I get an overload signal. Dug about 3-4" & I pick up a thick mud covered early to mid 40's Lionel train engine. I also find an ashtray, a broken jar full of old rusty bottle tops, a couple long (2.5'-4') old gas type pipes, a plastic piece that's intact that resembles an eyepiece to old binoculars or something similar tho you can't see thru it as the back is solid plastic but the piece has a plastic or glass window (where you would look into it if it were an eye piece) & there is liquid inside, it's sealed + doesn't open & I have no idea what it is. Then I find a very heavy & pretty big chunk of lead with copper inside, like the end of a majorly big power line/cable that's been cut off. I only checked about 15% of this "hole" as it was hard work with all the rocks & the dead tree that fell across it.
Next I went checked a little in the area around the foundation (within 40ft) & found some cans & junk (not much at all tho & nothing deep) but I did find a manhole cover at about a 45 degree angle with the closest part of it to the surface being about 5 or 6 inches deep so it obviously goes down about 2 feet or so as its a big full size manhole cover. I might go back with my buddy & dig it out at some point?
I think this site could be a good promising spot, no houses have been there since the 50's at the latest & while it's in the city it's very hidden + secluded. I need to dig out a lot more of rocks & move the dead tree that fell across it in order to hit the inside of the foundation real good, I kinda hope more of the train is down there!
Here are pix of the area & the finds. I show part of the uncovered foundation wall in a pic, the mounded area where the foundation is in pic 8, "it's the area below the hill on the right side center in the pic", the creek is to the right in this same pic. I show the general area from the mound towards the creek in one pic, the still buried manhole cover in a couple pix & then my cleaned finds. Oh in the 9th pic I sort of outlined the foundation as it's kind of hard to see. The last pic you can see where the foundation is by noticing the tree laying across it up in the upper middle area of the pic.
Not 1 single coin was found today tho it was more of a test run for the site. But when we left & went to check out another site not real far away & while walking down to it I find the gas $, a $10 bill that was quite dirty laying right on top of the ground. This is the 2nd time while heading to or from detection I've found a bill but this is the first $10 I've found. I melted the lead off the copper & the copper weighs 105 grams.
