J, dont know what camera you have or features but read the instructions and see if you have a manual focus and if there is a macro setting. also keep the file size down to 1280 x 764 or lower. this saves on disk space. The macro is for close ups. just back away a little or use a maginfying glass also helps.

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

Jim, look on your camera dial for an image of a flower. That should be the macro that floater is talking about. Mine has a separate macro switch on the side.

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

I did use the macro setting but I couldn't get it to focus properly will read some more ! Also, I use the email setting which is supposed to be small enough to fit on forums but it turns out most of the pictures are over 128 kb. Can't figure out how to reduce them further yet!

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

Even using the macro, the dime was probably still too close to your camera....back off a bit...??

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

There is a real fine distance gap on the macro. Definitely practice cause I had problems for a while as well.

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

I got a clearer photo but too many kb to post. Can't figure how to reduce size! Will keep trying .

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

When you bring up the pic in the computer, see if there is a task bar in you're camera program that says "Edit" and if so left click and see if in the column it says "resize". If so, left click it and when the box shows up with the pic size blank it and type 640. The bottom will probably change to 480. Otherwise someone with knowledge of Sony is gonna have to step in.

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

jim, not sure what type of camera you have, but would suggest checking to see if your view finder has an adjustable feature that allows you to focus thru the view finder. Try different setting on your camera and playing with the zoom so you can get the feel of your camera too. Don't give up and keep practicing.

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

I've had the camera a a couple of weeks but just got the manual for it by snail mail Tuesday. I got a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P73 which has the short movie feature also. The darn thing has so many features it will be like trying to learn my MD. I have barely learned to take snapshots with it so far. I'm not giving up , just hate to burn up so much space on the forum practicing. I guess I could go back and delete the boo boos. On the computer screen the photos look quite clear but on the forum they look out of focus. I'm sure it's operator error! Bear with me and I'll get it.

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

My new camera takes the same blurry closeups of small dime-sized items even with the macro on. My old camera was great at taking pics of small items.?Now I have to use an eyeloop or magnifying glass to get any detail with my new camera.? Annoys me to no end.

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

What kind of camera do you have now? I think I need to read up on how to set the camera for manual focus but haven't got that far in the manual yet! ::)

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

Try taking the pic in macro but not too close. then use whatever program you open pics with (I use photoshop) to zoom in on the pic and save it. Then post.

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

I appreciate the good advice, I'm working on it in my spare time which hasn't been much the last few days. Too many Honey Do's!

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

I use a scanner whenever possible to take pictures of my finds. I use HP software to crop the subject and eliminate any irrelevant background matter on the sides of the subject. If I use a camera, I print out a copy on photo paper and then scan the picture, cropping it down as close to the subject as possible. This cuts down dramatically on the file size of the picture.

I have a magnifying glass and I'll experiment with it. Thanks for all the good advice. I'm sure I will figure it out soon.

I have a sony dsc-p92 (5.0 megapixel)? and I have recently found that I can take decent photos of small objects with it, by taking a bigger picture , farther back from the object & then by cropping out the background. The problem with that is that one cant tell very well if the small object is in clear focus by looking at it on the small lcd screen (on the back of the camera). So i have to take numerous pics of the same object at varying lenths from the object & then pick the best one.

Also I cropped the pic using a free (free trial) screen-capture utility called "5clicks screencapture" ..... it is a free trial utility program that only lets you use it for a month or so , BUT I managed to find a "crack" for it on the net. (crack= a program that disables the trial option & allows one to use it indefinately). You may want to try 5 clicks out & IF you like it... I can send you the crack for it.? This ustility makes pics that are extemely small in file size ... so it is perfect for posting on forums that require small pic files.

Here is an example of a recent pic ..
Original pic....
Edit: note: I posted the pic , BUT it was so massive that it wouldnt allow anyone to read the entirety of my post as this forum wont let you scroll right & left so IF i posted the pic in its massive size... noone would be able to read the right half of my post)

Those pics are tremendous. What are we waiting for? Hook me up!

Re: New photo equipment a few pics of my "treasures"

Guys, I had to laugh when I read all the good tips. I too just bought a 4 megapixel camera. I think we need a subject just on posting pics. I can usualy get a decent close-up good enough to see the cavity on liberty's back tooth, but it takes up about 5 gig of memory when posting. :D
I am finding that you dont need to use the highest resolution to get decent pics, but sometimes you need to play with the image to get it to where you want it to be.
Good luck! I'll continue to watch for good advice on posting pics.
