Its been months since ive been detecting, but recently i noticed an old, overgrown farm property had been plowed up and ive been driving by every day, several times trying to catch the new owners. I finally stopped and asked the guys clearing and plowing the field and the new owners live right next door! After giving the homeowner my spiel and showing him my past finds he said i was welcome to metal detect. Oh, background on the property: it dates back to colonial times. It was always a farm field but the house was moved somewhere around the beginning of the 1900s. Spent about 5 hours there between yesterday and today. Slim pickins, tons of trash, but i managed to get a silver and some other neat stuff.

Saturdays first find is what looks to be a hand engraved door knob escutcheon thingy. Also found a watch part, three wheats, two modern dimes, an old broken pin, what looks to be a button, a fired bullet and bullet case, a key, some horse tack looking brass loop thing and a 1917 merc.

Today i scored a ringing croatal bell, a somewhat old fork, a bale seal, a super wiped ihp and a 1903 v nickel. I also found this super ornate wheelbarrow looking toy. I found the front wheel first and the sleigh part came afterwards from the same hole. No basket. I need to clean it up and look for writing.

Liking the toy carriage, thought for a bit that a cannon would have been on it. But a single wheel discounted that.

Yea. I really like the designs on the sides. Google isnt really helping. Ive been trying variations of “antique brass toy wheelbarrow”. Maybe ill figure it out. Maybe someone will find it. Time will tell

Good bunch of finds.
For future reference, the 'Crotal' Bell is actually a Sleigh Bell, you can tell from the top attachment.

Whenever the US went to war, like in 1917, the mint made a lot more coins. The 3 mints combined made 91,000,000 1917 dimes. They didn’t make that many in a yr again until the 40s and the beginning of WW2. The 1917 merc shows up quite often on the forum.

Hey Crusader. Whats the difference between a crotal bell and a sleigh bell? Arent they just two words for the same thing?

Nope, there not a different word but a totally different type of bell. A sleigh bell kind of screwed into the leather around the neck of the horse (in 2 rows of many bells normally), but a Crotal bell had a loop that hung off an animal, as a single bell. Mostly sheep & goats but the larger ones horses & cattle.

Gotcha. Sorry for calling it the wrong thing.

I was under the impression crotal bells were defined as an enclosed sphere with holes on the top and a slit on the bottom and an object inside to create a sound. I thought sleigh bells, jingle bells, pellet bells, hawk bells and rumbler bells were all crotal bells. My mistake.

Great Saves all around at the new permission site. I really like the toy wheel barrow and the silver merc. Congrat's
