Here's a couple overhangs that I found good signs of being inhabited in the past. The first is about 70 feet above a small spring creek. It's about 8' x 15' was you're inside with about a 6' ceiling that's covered in old black ash.

The next is a series of rock formations on a ridge above a large river. There are alot of overhangs and shelters in this formation, springs, caves and an outcropping of black and tan colored chert. I pictured several shelters and overhangs. From the ridge there's a great vantage point of the river and valley to the north and south. I didn't get a picture of the opening of the best looking shelter, it's about 12' x 20' with alot of space inside. The last pic is a view looking out of that one.

Now thats what i call livin the high life... :headbang:

Here are some winter retreats from Tennessee. They were used in the winters mostly during the nut harvest.
I have found if they did not use one that looks as good as yours it is because there may be an even better one in the area.

Man that is a great looking overhang Richard. It looks like the spot to set up camp or shelter out a storm. Nice looking crew of helpers too btw. Did you have any luck there?

Wow just killer I am under the impression all shelter overhangs have some occupation ?is there still smoke ceiling in thoose pictured ? Did the girl find her pants better make fire ?

This was a series of three large shelters. That was the main one. I excavated a stair way of rocks up one of the walls. First time I had seen anything like that. Yes we did ok there. The ceiling was to high for smoke stains but it is very common in the smaller shelters. A quick test hole may give you charcoal and flint. Girls always have fun on shelter digs. I hope to go back and dig out that large ceiling rock this spring.(I said that last year too)

Hopefully Treefrog will show some of his recent shelter digs from Tennessee or you can use the search feature for them. He did very well.
Fun post I like seeing all the shelters. What a view Ryan from that one. I hope you dropped down from the top :laughing7:
Good luck in all your hunts.

here ya go, not a big shelter but a lot of small ones across from each other on a creek bank.

Frog..in your 9th picture down snb13284, do you have a type on that point? I posted one a couple of days ago and asked for id but the picture wasn't very good and noone replied. Anyway it looks exactly like the one in your 9th picture, closest thing I could find to it was rice shallow notch

awesome thanks, never thought of that, i just fiqured its by the water they used it,lol. maybe not huh

Very nice........

Did I mention I live in west Texas. What was that blue looking stuff in the bottom of the canyon????

I remember your drinking buddy from another post. Looks like he enjoys the outdoors and is very photogenic. Good luck on the adventure. Think like a Native American Indian when searching! Keith.

Tnmtns, just saw where you said you excavated rock stairs, we found a rock shelter with a rock stairway, they were barely visable. Just assumed whiteman did it after the Indan occupation. No idea why we assumed that, cool to know you found some
I wish I had taken a picture of the steps.
