New or used

Depends on whether or not you want a warranty. Out of 7 detectors over the last few years the only brand new, never used ones in my arsenal were one purchased new and one won at a competition hunt. The others were bought used, but at a good enough price I felt I could afford to send them in to the manufacturer for repair or adjustment if needed. Fortunately, I haven't at this date needed any repairs or service. I guess it depends on how much you are willing to gamble. I'd try to buy from a local dealer that takes trades or a friend that is selling a known quantity if possible although 3 of the ones I mentioned came off Ebay. Just my two bits.

Every detector I've had since 1982 has been used except for one. I've never had any trouble with any of them. The only detector I bought new was a Minelab Explorer XS. The next one's gonne be an SE.

Personally, I'd rather have a used, high end detector than a new cheaper one.
I like to deal with companies that refurbish detectors. Sometimes you can find a pretty good deal. Ebay is okay too, you just really have to watch who you deal with. I've never yet bought a brand new machine, as I've been happy with the used and refurbished ones.

im on the other side of the fence. i like to buy electronic stuff new. electronic components wear out and are often fragile. i like the idea of getting a machine right from the factory with a warranty just in case.
