I finally found a nickel! I don't find many but found this one on top of the ground by the highschool. It's one of the new ones with Jefferson on the front and a 4 legged buffalo on the back. Pretty neat looking coin but alas clad no doubt? It's the first one I've found and haven't seen amy in change from the stores. It looked uncirculated. Are they out now? Any opinions? Are they replacing the old clad nickel entirely or is this a special run? I think I'll keep this one for luck...gpod luck I hope! JIM

Congrats Jim.

It's just a Special Issue . #3 in I'm not shure how many, or how often.

Can you go to the bank and just ask for those? I would imagine they would arrive to the banks in rolls, seems like you should be able to ask for a roll... Not sure how banking protocol works though.

YES. If they Have some In yet, You can get them at the bank

Around here I have been finding them for a few weeks now. , I have found several that seem to be a little different than you might expect. The bison appears to definately be a HIM. Look closely. Just looking at the image on the US Mint.gov site, it doesn't quite look the same.

Hey Jim, they are all around in northern Va in stores...I think they are pretty cool looking myself. If I am not mistaken, I believe they are only for a year or 2 though for minting. Congrads again and good luck huntin!!!

Hi all, Here's a scan for those who haven't seen one. Here in NY I've been getting them pretty often. Get them now 'cause as Jeff mentioned they will be replaced mid-year with the other design. Then they're gone( too bad, I like 'em).

I ordered 10 rolls from the U.S. mint a couple months ago, they are back ordered, told me they were shipping out daily from back orders. The banks around here are saying they can't get them, don't know if I believe that one or not because I am sometimes finding them in change. I only collect the uncirculated in rolls.

Clad nickels? What is a clad nickel? Today's nickels have the same composition as nickels have had all along (war nickels being the exception).

Our dimes, quarters, halves and dollars are clad. Our cents are zinc crap. But our nickels are 25% nickel, 75% copper just as they have been since 1866.

i couldn't get rolls from my bank but did manage to get a couple of rolls from my local coin dealer.I understand that they have to go back to the monticello reverse but they might keep the new jefferson obverse.

peace,bigrig

If it ain't silver then I refer to it by the generic name of "clad" but thanks for pointing out the difference. There are some pennies out there that technicaly aren't clad either but I call them "clad" too! JIM

Jim,

I didn't mean to give you a hard time about the nickels. They are the only "real" coin we have left.

A clad coin is a coin that has one metal sandwiched between two layers of another metal (or combination of metals). Look at the edge of a clad "silver" coin (10?, 25?, 50?, $1) and you will see copper sandwiched between two layers of a silvery material (cupro-nickel or a copper-nickel mix).

Somewhat similarly our cents now are zinc with an extremely thin copper plating. The zinc cents are technically not clad but plated.

Nickels are 75% copper and 25% nickel. The composition is uniform throughout the coin instead of being different layers of materials like the other coins.

Clad: To sheathe or cover (a metal) with a metal.

Hope that helps explain it a little better.

The silver mint proof sets from the U.S. mint have quarters, dimes. and halves that are 90% silver and 10% copper although the nickel, penny, and sacagowea dollar are the same o same o as before. Thanks for responding.
