New Minelab Excalibur ... Tuning for Goldmines not Landmines

I just got a Minelab Excalibur 800 and I'm in an area with possible unexploded ordnance (landmines, grenades, what haveyou). I'm not into the WWII Relics - could care less about bullets, helmets, guns, buttons. I want to weed out brass, iron, steel, lead ... in fact, I can really do without Clad too. I would love to have this thing nail down three things, gold, silver, and platinum --- everything else can stay in the sea. I know this may be what a lot of people want to do - but are there any steps I can take to be extra cautious?

You could probably do that for silver, but I don't think any machine on the market will allow its user to dig ONLY gold or platinum...

There is no detector made that will only find gold, silver and platinium. The Excal will null on the smaller Iron but still respond to larger iron. There is just no way around it, no detector can do it. If someone made such a detector, do you think they would sell it to us.

If you are in an area where there may be unexploded land mines you should maybe take up another hobby.

Agreed if you have unexploded mines in the area its best to leave well enoough alone. The majority of folks out there would love to only hit on gold silver and plat. The truth is with any detector out there you got to dig everything in order to find the good stuff.

that's great advice from Sandman & TxKickergirl, besides if the area is known for landmines and other ordinance, swimming has probably been limited anyway. One way you might discriminate the bigger stuff is just gingerly go for only the very narrow responses. If we don't hear from you again, we'll just assume you went up in smoke.

Well noted. As far as I know nobody's blown themselves up since WWII, and the places I'm going to hunt have been highly trampled. But, who knows when you go digging around - might not be a landmine that gets me.... grenades, fuses, other kinds of ammo. I think we're all subject to running across these things no matter where we are. I just wanted to get the best detector I could buy and try to tune out the questionable stuff and get rich or die trying. :icon_pirat:

Aside - I really don't want Brass - anyway to get rid of Brass using the Excal 800?

Casey,Made it to Guam. That's great.Could have handled things better state side.Know what I
mean.Water under the bridge.Wishing you well on the MDing.As for brass,lead ,aluminum,and
all soft non ferrous metals, they are in the same range as gold and other precious metals. Can
crank up the disc to 13 and still get some heavy gold rings, but not get rid of all the less valuable
metals.Play with it till you find what works in your specific area.Good luck,Joe
