Hello everyone, I just got my very first metal detector!!! My third day in I was in a construction zone near hospital and beach and found a trade token I am doing research on and saw a few similar coins on this site and thought maybe someone could help me. Not sure how to use site nor if im sending message to a post wall or what. Anyway, I found a J.M Brunswick and Balke Co trade token and on other side says Berken Bros. Coin is in Very good shape. Brunswick emailed me back it was used from 1874 to 1884 but not sure where or who Berken Bros. are. Any info would help. Thank you and Happy Hunting!

Nice find! This token is what is called a "maverick", meaning the location is not stated. Brunswick tokens were used all over the country and this one has not yet been attributed to a certain location. I'll do some research, but it would help to know (generally) where it was found. That does not prove anything in itself, but it is more usual for a token to be from the area where it was found, rather than on the opposite side of the country. The Berken Bros. probably operated a billiard hall and saloon.

That was easy right? Why not find an old timer in your area and ask them Or a librarian, Or the newspaper archives. Might be on microfilm in the nearest university library. Nice find though.

Found in Eau Claire wisconsin near luther hospital and half moon beach if that helps
