Hello Everyone

My name is Jeff!

I recently moved to Fernandina Beach Florida, and after wanting to get to the beach and start my new hobby, I finally bought my first detector and jumped in today!

I purchased a Garret Ace 250 as a Christmas gift for myself and couldn't wait to start. I had a Bounty Hunter a few years back but this Garret seemed so much more advanced. I now live 1 block from the beach, and plan on spending a lot of time working on improving my skills. I am a newbie, I started my new Florida hobby today, so please be gentle with my comments or ignorance. I want to learn as much as I can.

I wanted to do a bench test today on the beach, so I went with a penny, nickel, dime and quarter, and just threw them on the beach and dove right in. Within minutes the detector recognized a penny, then another, and another and a dime and nickle a quarter. My excitement was incredible. This detector told me exactly what was there and how deep. I recovered my 41 cents and an addition 74 cents in one hour.

I hope to make some new friends here, and learn a lot, and I will share all my finds with anyone interested.

Look forwarded to being a part of this forum.

Thank you Debby. I am very familiar with Bradenton. I lived in Lakewood Ranch for many years. Now I am on the Northeast tip and much closer to the beach to enjoy my new hobby. Nice to meet you.

Hello and welcome aboard Jeff!

Welcome from White Plains, New York! The most important things I can tell you about beach detecting are these:

Go Early morning or early evening before and after the crowds. NEVER hunt in between folks on the beach as A) it slows you down and bodies and towels are covering your hunting area, B) It pisses people off.

Grid! Start by choosing an area 50-feet long, by 50-feet wide. First detect from the North to South. When you have detected the entire grid, turn 90-degrees and detect it again East to West. Moving slowly and methodically, you will be able to pass your coil over every inch of the 50' x 50' area. Coins, watches, rings, bracelets, Ipods, cell phones, car keys - you'll find it all! The phrase to remember is "low and slow." Keeping your coil as low and flat to the sand as you can, while moving slowly enough to assure your sweeps overlap each other is the real key to success.

Go Slower! When you think you are moving your coil too slow across the sand, slow down some more. Make SURE you are overlapping your swings as you move forward.

Have Fun! That next pulltab is going to be a Gold Ring with Ice! :occasion14:

welcome, good luck hunting, sounds like you are addicted too

Thanks Terry for that advice, I will definitely take it slower. I will have to start living on Island Time as the locals say.

Hey guys, I have a question. I am not getting any emails to tell me anyone has responded to my posts, I have to check in here periodically. I have my posts marked as subscribed, but I have not gotten a single email notification. Am I missing the setting so I can get emails when a post is replied to. Thanks

Jeff
