Hello from Florida... I am looking to purchase my first MD and have read so much to confuse myself. But I have learned a lot during the past two weeks of research. I am ready to buy a MD but still on the fence. From all I have read it seems that the Garrett is a pretty easy unit to start with. The 250 or 350 seem like the best but I heard a lot of good things about the AT Pro. But wonder if this one is a little more that I may need as a starter. So I would appreciate your feedback and suggestions.

I was in the market for my first detector about 2 years ago and decided to go for the AT Pro, rather than various other options. Glad I did.

The learning curve was actually fun, as I experimented with a lot of objects and sounds in my yard. When I am not doing anything in particular, I sometimes take out various items from my treasure box and listen to the tones.

If you are near a beach in Florida, spend some time in the dry sand. Dig all the signals and get use to the sounds they emit. It is much easier digging in dry sand and in no time you will get an educated ear for the AT Pro tones.

I spent some time on the beach during the typical rain showers, knowing that the machine can handle wet.

I am moving to the Tampa area in a month or so, and hope to see you around.

I noticed you mention of Civil War history-there was a lot of activity in Florida during the War of Northern Aggression way beyond Olustee and Natural Bridge, from Union raids on salt works in Cedar Key,to the looting and burning of Yulee's Margarita Plantation in Homosassa and capture of Davis's baggage at Yulee's Cottonwood Plantation in Archer,to the escape of part of Davis's cabinet through Silver Springs and Ocala. The St Johns River and Oklawaha River had several Union and Confederate forts, and Confederate river blockade runners used both. Then there is the CSA "Cow Cavalry" in south Florida out of Fort Meade, and Union occupied Fort Meyers.
There is a lot of information on TN.You joined a great site. HH

Welcome to Treasurenet! If your budget will allow for the Garrett AT Pro, it will be a better choice. The ground balance capability allows you to mitigate some of the mineralization in the soil. Good luck on your search, and give me a call if I can help you answer any questions.

Welcome. I just started detecting about a month ago I started with a ACE 350. I like it easy to use but I am already looking to upgrade to the AT Pro.. Good luck and happy hunting..

Welcome to the forum from N. Mississippi. The Garrett detectors are good along with the Fishers, Tesoro's, white's and lots more. I've got the AT Pro and a Fisher limited. Figure out what you will hunt the most, ask someone in the hobby what the average ground mineralization is in your area is and ask a dealer to match you with the detector that's better in that soil. also weight is a factor. Detectors weight from 2.5 to 5 lbs. Choose one you could swing a day and not be uncomfortable with. Good luck.

Hello Irish Reb and welcome from Alabama. I wish you happy hunting. Feel free to share your cool finds as well as the things that you learn.
